Job description

Staff Software Engineer - IE07IE

We’re determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals – and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.

The Hartford’s Corporate Actuarial Engineering organization is seeking a highly motivated, detail‑oriented, and results‑driven Staff Software Engineer (Hybrid) to work on the team supporting applications across all segments

This role is focused on designing and delivering AI‑enabled and agentic AI solutions, including building intelligent applications, automation workflows, and AI‑driven integrations that support employee lifecycle processes, legal operations, compliance, and shared enterprise services.

The Staff Software Engineer has end‑to‑end responsibility for designing, building, and supporting solutions across multiple platforms and technologies. The primary focus of this role is to develop scalable, AI‑powered applications and integrations using cloud platforms (primarily AWS, with exposure to GCP).

This includes applying AI and GenAI capabilities to improve efficiency, automate processes, and enable new business capabilities across Actuarial platforms.

This role requires hands‑on experience designing and implementing AI/GenAI solutions, including integrations, applied use cases, and agentic workflows.

Experience with .NET (C#) is preferred to support integration with existing applications and modernization efforts where needed.

This position works closely with Actuaries, product owners, business stakeholders, architects, and partner teams, and is accountable for delivering well‑architected, stable, performant, and secure solutions while continuing to modernize platforms through cloud, automation, and AI‑driven initiatives.

This role will play a key part in advancing the organization’s AI‑first engineering strategy by building and scaling real‑world AI solutions within enterprise platforms.

The role has a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in the office three days per week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of robust, scalable, and secure software solutions across various platforms and technologies.

  • Collaborate with product owners, architects, and other engineering teams to define technical requirements, scope projects, and ensure alignment with business goals.

  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical guidance, code reviews, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

  • Drive best practices in software development, including coding standards, testing methodologies, release processes, and AI-assisted development practices.

  • Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues, ensuring the stability and performance of critical systems.

  • Contribute to the evolution of the software architecture, identifying opportunities for improvement and innovation.

  • Participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle, from conceptualization to deployment and maintenance.

  • Evaluate and integrate new technologies, tools, frameworks, and AI-enabled capabilities to enhance development efficiency and product capabilities.

  • Explore and leverage intelligent automation, prompt-driven development techniques, and AI-assisted engineering tools where appropriate.

  • Effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in software development, with a proven track record of delivering successful projects.

  • Expertise in at least one modern programming language such as Java, Python, C#, or Go.

  • Strong experience building full-stack applications using Angular, React, Node.js, and RESTful APIs.

  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices architecture, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).

  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., SQL Server, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MongoDB).

  • Proficiency in designing and building RESTful APIs and event-driven architectures.

  • Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and release management tools.

  • Familiarity with Generative AI concepts, Large Language Models (LLMs), prompt engineering, and AI-assisted software development practices.

  • Experience integrating AI-powered capabilities, intelligent automation solutions, or conversational applications into enterprise platforms is a plus.

  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience in the insurance or financial services industry is a plus.

  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools and platforms such as GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, Google Vertex AI, GCP Agent Development Kit (ADK), or similar technologies is a plus.

  • Familiarity with prompt engineering, intelligent automation, Responsible AI principles, and integrating AI capabilities into enterprise applications is a plus.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Columbus, OH, Chicago, IL, Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.
