What is a Sr Development Engineer?

Sr Development Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing, developing, and improving products, systems, or software within an organization. They lead technical projects, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex engineering problems. Their work often involves overseeing the entire development lifecycle, from concept to deployment, ensuring solutions meet quality, performance, and cost requirements.

What does a senior development engineer do?

A senior development engineer designs, develops, and tests software or hardware products, often leading projects and mentoring junior team members. They utilize programming languages, development tools, and engineering principles to create reliable and efficient solutions, typically working in collaborative environments with project deadlines. Strong problem-solving skills and experience with relevant technologies are essential for this role.

How much does a senior development engineer make?

A senior development engineer typically earns between $100,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often have advanced skills in programming, system design, and may hold certifications that influence salary levels.

What are some typical challenges faced by a Sr Development Engineer when leading cross-functional projects?

Sr Development Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning diverse technical perspectives, managing conflicting priorities, and ensuring clear communication among cross-functional teams. They are responsible for bridging gaps between engineering, product management, and other departments to keep projects on track. Success in this role requires strong leadership, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving to address technical obstacles and facilitate collaboration. These experiences can significantly enhance leadership and project management skills, contributing to career advancement opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Development Engineer?

To thrive as a Sr Development Engineer, you need deep expertise in engineering principles, advanced problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by substantial experience in product or software development. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as CAD software, programming languages, or project management platforms, as well as certifications like PMP or Six Sigma, is highly advantageous. Senior Propulsion Development Engineer

True Anomaly

Denver, CO โ€ข On-site

Job description

YOUR MISSION

As a Senior Propulsionย Developmentย Engineer at True Anomaly, you will play a foundational role inย setting the path for propulsion testing andย rapid design maturation. You will define what the facility needs to do, evaluate how to build it, and make the technical case for infrastructure decisions that will shape True Anomaly's test operations for years to come. This means developing detailed test stand requirements, leading trade studies across facility architecture and infrastructure options, and working alongside theย Propulsion and Test teamsย toย define test plansย and define aย facility that is safe, capable, and built to scale. This is a rare opportunity toย stand up aย new propulsion test capability from a blank sheetย and thenย transition intoย a recurring roleย managingย propulsion development test programsย that come through the facility.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Test Stand Requirements & Capability Definitionย

  • Develop and own the test stand requirements for True Anomaly's new propulsion test facility, derived from current andย anticipatedย propulsion hardware test needs across the spacecraft and missile defense portfolio.ย
  • Define test stand performance envelopes: thrust levels, propellant flow rates, operating pressures, temperature ranges, test duration, and data acquisition requirements.ย
  • Establish requirements for propellant storage and delivery systems,ย pressurantย supply, purge and vent systems, fire suppression, and facility utilities.ย
  • Work with propulsionย engineering teamย to understand hardware under test interfaces and ensure test stand designs fully accommodateย theย hardware needsย
  • Establish andย maintainย documentationย of theย facility designย and capability as itย evolves.ย

Trade Studies & Infrastructure Analysisย

  • Lead structured trade studies evaluating facility infrastructure options including test stand configurations, propellant feed system architecture, GSE procurement vs. fabrication, data acquisition system platforms, and facility control room layouts.ย
  • Define figures of merit, evaluate alternatives against cost, schedule, safety, scalability, and operational flexibility, and produce clear recommendations with supporting analysis.ย
  • Research and assess commercially available test stand components, instrumentation systems, and GSE equipment; engage vendors and evaluate technical proposals.ย
  • Evaluate site infrastructure options including water supply, electrical power, gas supply, and effluent management toย identifyย constraints and preferred solutions.ย
  • Document trade study results in formal reports suitable for review by program leadership and external stakeholders.ย

Facility Design Supportย

  • Translate requirements and trade study outcomes into facility design inputs; collaborate with civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers to ensure test stand and infrastructure designs are correctly specified.ย
  • Reviewย design drawings, P&IDs, and equipment specificationsย submittedย documents forย technical accuracy and compliance with requirements.ย
  • Support development of the facility hazard analysis, safety basis documentation, and operating procedures as the technical subject matter expert on test stand capabilities and limitations.ย
  • Identifyย and track open technical risks associated with facility design and infrastructure procurement; develop mitigation plans.ย

Test Operations Developmentย

  • Contribute to the development of test procedures, data acquisition plans, and instrumentation layouts forย initialย test campaigns as the facility transitions from construction to operations.ย
  • Support facility acceptance testing and commissioning, including verification that installed systems meet defined requirements.ย
  • Assist with anomaly investigations during facility buildup and early operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering.ย
  • 8+ years of professional experience in propulsion or fluid systems test engineering for aerospace, defense, or high-reliability applications.ย
  • Demonstrated experience developing test stand or test facility requirements for propulsion or fluid system hardware.ย
  • Experience conducting and documenting formal engineering trade studies, with the ability to define evaluation criteria, analyze alternatives, and independently defend recommendations to senior leadership.ย
  • Strong working knowledge of propulsion and fluid system components: engines, valves, regulators, tanks, pressurization systems, and feed system architectures.ย
  • Familiarity with facility infrastructure systems supporting propulsion test: propellant storage and delivery,ย pressurantย supply, purge and vent, fire suppression, and data acquisition.ย
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive technical tasks to closure with minimal oversight.ย
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, well-structured technical reports and present findings to leadership.ย

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering.ย
  • Direct experience supporting the design, buildout, or commissioning of a new propulsion test stand or test facility.ย
  • Hands-on experience with propellant handling and hazardous fluid operations, including familiarity with applicable safety standards and regulatory requirements.ย
  • Experience with P&ID development and review for propulsion ground systems.ย
  • Proficiencyย with data acquisition systems and test automation platforms (LabVIEW, Python, MATLAB).ย
  • Familiarity with relevant standards: MIL-STD, AIAA propulsion test standards, NASA-STD-5012, or equivalent.ย
  • Experience with cleaning, passivation, and cleanliness verification for hypergolic-compatible fluid systems.ย
  • Experience engaging and technically evaluating vendors for test equipment, GSE, or facility infrastructure.ย
  • Familiarity with Colorado Front Range permitting, zoning, or environmental requirements for hazardous materials operations.ย
  • Active DoD security clearance (Secret or above), or ability to obtain one.ย

COMPENSATION

  • Base Salary:ย $135,000 to $190,000ย
  • Equity + Benefits including Health, Dental, Vision, HRA/HSA options, PTO and paid holidays, 401K, Parental Leaveย
