What is a senior accountant?

Sr Accounting positions, or Senior Accounting roles, are advanced-level jobs in the accounting field. Professionals in these roles are responsible for overseeing complex financial tasks such as preparing financial statements, managing ledgers, analyzing budgets, and ensuring compliance with regulations. They often supervise junior accountants and work closely with management to support strategic financial planning. Typically, Sr Accountants have several years of experience and may hold certifications like CPA (Certified Public Accountant).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior accountant?

To thrive as a Senior Accountant, you need advanced knowledge of accounting principles, financial analysis, and reporting, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and several years of relevant experience. Expertise in accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, and certifications like CPA or CMA, are commonly required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication set standout professionals apart. These skills ensure accurate financial management, regulatory compliance, and the ability to provide valuable insights to support business decisions.

How does a senior accountant typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Senior Accountants frequently work cross-functionally with departments such as finance, operations, and human resources to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance. They may assist in budget planning with department heads, support audits by coordinating with internal teams, and provide financial insights to guide business decisions. Effective communication and the ability to translate complex financial data for non-financial colleagues are key skills in these collaborative efforts. This cross-departmental interaction not only helps streamline processes but also provides broader visibility into the company's operations.

A great UHY client is seeking a Sr. Accounting Manager to build and lead the accounting function for a newly formed, private equity-backed dental partnership organization. This role will have significant ownership over accounting operations, financial reporting, close processes, systems integration, and team development while helping establish scalable processes as the organization continues to grow through acquisition.

The Sr. Accounting Manager role is a fully remote position, with a preference for candidates located in the Eastern or Central time zones. This is a permanent opportunity offering significant visibility to company leadership, hands-on involvement in building an accounting function from the ground up, and a clear path toward a Controller-level role as the organization scales.

  • Own the monthly close process, including review of balance sheet accounts and ensuring financial records remain accurate and audit-ready
  • Standardize and centralize accounting processes, systems, and procedures across multiple entities
  • Oversee monthly financial statements, AP/AR aging, budgets, cash reporting, and other financial management reports
  • Provide leadership with timely financial information, analysis, and insights to support decision-making
  • Oversee payroll processing and related banking and treasury activities
  • Manage the Accounts Payable function, including vendor disbursements, cash flow analytics, and spending trends
  • Establish and maintain effective accounting processes and internal controls
  • Lead technical accounting activities related to acquisitions, including purchase accounting and integration of acquired entities into the company’s chart of accounts and systems
  • Coordinate annual audits and serve as a key point of contact for external auditors
  • Recruit, hire, develop, and manage accounting staff as the organization grows
  • Develop accounting estimates in accordance with GAAP to support a timely and disciplined close
  • Evaluate new and existing accounting standards and recommend appropriate accounting policies and procedures
  • Identify opportunities to improve and streamline accounting processes and systems
  • Partner with leadership on financial and accounting initiatives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

Sr. Accounting Manager Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience required
  • Direct people-management experience required
  • Experience within a growing, acquisitive, or private equity-backed organization preferred
  • Public accounting experience, preferably Big 4 or a strong regional firm, preferred
  • Multi-site healthcare or dental industry experience preferred
  • Experience integrating acquisitions preferred
  • Strong knowledge of accrual accounting and cash-to-accrual conversion
  • Experience with lease accounting under ASC 842 required
  • Advanced Excel skills required
  • Experience working across multiple general ledger systems required
  • Sage Intacct experience strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with Ramp a plus
  • CPA preferred
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and process improvement skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to operate independently and take ownership in an evolving environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across functions
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, private equity-backed organization
