Job description

St. Mary's Healthcare has been named a 2026 Times Union Top Workplace. We are the first acute care hospital in the Capital Region to earn the distinction since the Times Union launched the recognition program 14 years ago.
Overview
St. Mary's Healthcare is seeking a dedicated Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) to support our Spinal Surgery operations. This full-time, hospital-employed position offers the opportunity to work alongside a fellowship-trained spine specialist, supporting both surgical and non-surgical spinal care across the continuum. You'll manage pre-operative and post-operative patients, assist in the OR, conduct inpatient rounding, and manage follow-up care in our outpatient clinic.
Our organization is a trusted healthcare leader with a 100+ year legacy of delivering exceptional, patient-centered care. As part of the orthopedic and spine surgery team, you'll collaborate with experienced surgeons, physical therapists, and a dedicated care team in a modern surgical setting equipped with cutting-edge technology, including the Da Vinci XI Robotic Surgery System. St. Mary's is deeply committed to expanding access to high-quality spinal care across Fulton and Montgomery Counties and the surrounding region.
Position Highlights:
  • Full-time, hospital-employed position supporting a fellowship-trained spinal surgeon
  • Primary APP for the spine program, assisting in surgery and providing clinical support
  • Diverse caseload including degenerative spine disorders, trauma, and complex cases
  • Work in state-of-the-art surgical suites with advanced imaging and minimally invasive tools
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in a growing spine service line

Responsibilities:
  • Assist the spinal surgeon in the operating room during complex and minimally invasive procedures
  • Perform pre- and post-operative evaluations, including patient education and discharge planning
  • Manage follow-up care, post-surgical visits, and rehabilitation coordination in the outpatient clinic
  • Conduct inpatient consults and daily rounds, maintaining continuity of care
  • Evaluate and manage common spinal conditions, provide treatment recommendations, and support surgical decision-making
  • Collaborate with surgical and non-surgical providers to ensure high-quality, integrated spine care
  • Maintain accurate medical records and EMR documentation
  • Participate in clinical initiatives, patient safety programs, and spine program development

Qualifications:
Required Credentials - Certified and registered as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
Preferred Experience - Previous orthopedic or neurosurgical spine experience preferred, but not required. Prior robotics experience or willingness to pursue advanced arthroscopic techniques.
Education - Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
Skills - Strong clinical judgment, procedural competency, and ability to thrive in the OR and clinic. Excellent patient-centered communication skills.
Compensation & Benefits:
  • Base Salary Range - $131,750 and up (commensurate with experience).
  • Generous Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Retirement plans with employer contributions
  • Potential eligibility for loan repayment programs due to our HPSA designation

Complexity of Work:
This role requires a high level of autonomy, surgical competency, and critical thinking in caring for complex spine patients. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of spinal anatomy and pathology, and demonstrate a commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in both surgical and clinical settings.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Adherence to Standard Precautions and utilization of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) are mandatory to ensure the safety of both patients and staff.
