Job description

Punahou Athletics plays an integral role in the student experience. The philosophy of Punahou Athletics encourages student athletes, within the framework of the educational mission of the school, to be the best that they can be, to be the best team person, and to be a true team player, with the idea that this is what defines winning. The Athletics Department supports more than 149 teams in over 30 sports. Punahou's athletic teams have enjoyed unparalleled success since the school was founded in 1841. The school also received notable recognition in Sports Illustrated as the top high school athletic program in the country.
The Punahou Athletics Department is seeking a part time regular, dynamic and knowledgeable Athletic Performance Coaches to develop and implement strength and conditioning programs that enhance athletic performance while prioritizing safety. This role is responsible for supervising training sessions in the weight room and other athletic facilities, ensuring that student-athletes receive scientifically based performance training. The Athletic Performance Coach will collaborate with coaches, athletic trainers, and administrators to support the holistic development of student-athletes. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist in design and implementing structured strength and conditioning programs for assigned sports teams to optimize athletic performance and reduce injury risk.
  • Utilize scientifically based training principles to enhance strength, speed, agility, mobility, and endurance.
  • Teach and reinforce proper weightlifting, speed, agility, and conditioning techniques with appropriate progressions.
  • Educate student-athletes on injury prevention strategies and best practices in training.
  • Oversee weight room activities, ensuring safe and effective execution of training programs.
  • Manage daily weight room operations, team training schedules, and safety protocols.
  • Assist with performance testing, athlete monitoring, and standarized data collection to support athletic performance and long-term athlete development.

Position Details:
  • Work Year: 9 Months
  • School Year: 2026-2027
  • Work Hours: Monday - Friday, Variable hours between 6:00 AM - 12:00 PM, Schedule may vary based on operational needs
  • Minimum Hourly Rate*: $20.00/Hour - Compensation is commensurate with qualifications.

*Punahou School offers a comprehensive total rewards program that includes competitive pay. Pay for selected candidates will be determined by various factors such as knowledge, skills, abilities, relevant training and experience, and internal equity.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a related field in progress or National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification in progress or equivalent combination of education, experience and training.
    CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • In-depth knowledge of strength training principles, movement mechanics, and injury prevention strategies.
  • Strong instructional skills, including teaching proper lifting techniques and progressions.
  • Working knowledge of emergency procedures and safety protocols.
  • Basic computer proficiency for program tracking and communication.
  • Proven ability to lead both small and large groups effectively in a variety of training settings.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently, assess needs, and make informed decisions.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful training environment.
