What is specimen management?

Specimen management refers to the process of collecting, labeling, transporting, processing, and storing biological samples such as blood, urine, or tissue in medical and laboratory settings. This role ensures that specimens are handled properly to maintain their integrity and prevent contamination, which is crucial for accurate diagnostic testing. Professionals in specimen management also track specimens using laboratory information systems and comply with safety and regulatory guidelines. Their work is vital in supporting clinical decisions and patient care.

Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to work accurately under pressure are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for maintaining specimen integrity, ensuring accurate test results, and supporting efficient laboratory operations.
