What is specimen accessioning?

Specimen accessioning is the process of receiving, labeling, and documenting samples such as blood, tissue, or other biological materials in a laboratory. This step ensures that each specimen is accurately identified and tracked throughout the testing process. Accessioning typically involves verifying patient information, assigning unique identifiers, and entering data into laboratory information systems. Proper specimen accessioning is critical for maintaining sample integrity and ensuring reliable test results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Specimen Accessioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Specimen Accessioner, you need strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often with some laboratory or healthcare experience. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), barcode scanners, and specimen tracking software is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to work accurately under pressure are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the proper identification, handling, and processing of specimens, which is vital for laboratory accuracy and patient safety.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in specimen accessioning?

A typical day in specimen accessioning involves receiving, labeling, and entering patient specimens into the laboratory information system to ensure accurate tracking and processing. You’ll collaborate closely with laboratory technicians, couriers, and sometimes healthcare providers to resolve discrepancies and maintain specimen integrity. Attention to detail is critical, as errors can impact patient care. The work is fast-paced, often requiring you to manage multiple tasks while adhering to strict protocols and turnaround times.
