What is specimen accessioning?

Specimen accessioning is the process of receiving, labeling, and documenting samples such as blood, tissue, or other biological materials in a laboratory. Accessioning typically involves verifying patient information, assigning unique identifiers, and entering data into laboratory information systems. Proper specimen accessioning is critical for maintaining sample integrity and ensuring reliable test results.

These competencies ensure the proper identification, handling, and processing of specimens, which is vital for laboratory accuracy and patient safety.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in specimen accessioning?
