Specification information

What is a job specification?

A job specification is a detailed document that outlines the skills, qualifications, experience, and attributes required for a specific role. It helps employers define the ideal candidate and guides recruitment and selection processes. Job specifications often include educational requirements, technical skills, and personal qualities necessary for successful performance.

What is the difference between Specification vs Drafting Technician?

While specifications define the detailed requirements for a product or project, drafting technicians focus on creating the visual representations of those specifications through technical drawings. Both roles are essential in the design and manufacturing process, often working closely together to ensure accuracy and clarity in project execution.

Exciting Career Opportunity at Mercer-Zimmerman!

Are you looking to build a successful career with a growth-oriented, family-owned business? Join Mercer Zimmerman, a trusted lighting manufacturer’s representative with a team of over 130 experts specializing in sales, client service, lighting, technology, design, and more!

We’re proud to contribute to Des Moines’ most exciting new commercial construction projects, and we’re hiring a self-motivated, collaborative sales professional to join our dynamic team.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an individual who is familiar with the construction industry and eager to collaborate with our team, manufacturers, and the local specification community—including architects, engineers, and lighting designers. Together, we’ll deliver top-quality products, technical support, and exceptional service to our clients.

This is a full-time, salaried position offering competitive pay, a comprehensive benefits package, paid time-off, a 401k plan, wellness perks, and, most importantly, a company culture and value system that attract and retain a strong team of diverse professionals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Client Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong, mutually beneficial relationships in the Des Moines market, making Mercer-Zimmerman the go-to agency for lighting and controls solutions.
  • Product Expertise: Stay up to date with regular manufacturer trainings, updates, and sales calls to ensure a deep understanding of the innovative lines we represent.
  • Product Demonstrations: Conduct engaging product trainings, either in the field or at manufacturer facilities, to showcase our wide range of cutting-edge lighting solutions.
  • Consultative Support: Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, offering superior solutions tailored to meet design specifications, budgets, and timelines.
  • Team Collaboration: Partner with our inside team to advocate for clients throughout the bidding process, submittals, order management, and installation phases.

Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • Strong Communicator: You excel in both verbal and written communication.
  • Relationship-Builder: Your ability to develop and maintain trust is second to none, thanks to your integrity and follow-through.
  • Problem-Solver: You thrive on finding creative solutions and thinking proactively to avoid potential challenges.
  • Team Player: You’re driven by collaboration and are committed to the company’s overall success.
  • Adaptable Professional: You feel comfortable engaging with everyone—from top-level executives to field personnel—and can manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Tech-Savvy: You have the ability to grasp technical information and are proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Qualifications:
  • Experience: A minimum of 3–5 years of outside sales experience.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, design, engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Industry Expertise: Experience in the architectural or lighting design field is a plus.
