What does a sound engineer do?

A Sound Engineer is responsible for capturing, mixing, and manipulating audio to achieve the desired sound quality for various projects such as music recordings, live events, films, or television. Their tasks can include setting up microphones, operating mixing consoles, editing audio tracks, and ensuring optimal acoustics. Sound Engineers work closely with producers, musicians, and other technical staff to create a polished final product. They play a crucial role in both the technical and creative aspects of audio production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sound engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sound Engineer, you need a solid understanding of audio theory, acoustics, and recording techniques, often supported by a degree or certification in audio engineering or a related field. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools or Logic Pro, as well as expertise in mixing consoles and microphones, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills set outstanding sound engineers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality audio experiences and collaborating effectively with artists and production teams.

What are some common challenges sound engineers face when working on live events, and how can they prepare for them?

Sound Engineers working on live events often encounter challenges such as unexpected technical issues, fluctuating acoustics, and last-minute changes from performers or event organizers. To prepare, it's important to conduct thorough sound checks, have backup equipment readily available, and maintain clear communication with the production team. Flexibility and quick problem-solving skills are essential, as live environments can be unpredictable. Building strong relationships with performers and colleagues also helps ensure smooth coordination during high-pressure situations.

What is the difference between Sound Engineer vs Audio Technician?

AspectSound EngineerAudio Technician
CredentialsRelevant audio engineering certifications, technical trainingTechnical training, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentRecording studios, live events, film setsBroadcast stations, live events, production facilities
Industry UsageMusic, film, TV, live soundBroadcast, event production, AV support
Job FocusDesigning, mixing, and producing soundSetting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting audio equipment

While both roles involve working with audio equipment, a Sound Engineer primarily focuses on designing, mixing, and producing sound for various media, whereas an Audio Technician handles the setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of audio systems. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and responsibilities within the audio production process.

Are sound engineers in high demand?

Sound engineers are in moderate demand, especially in the entertainment, live events, and recording industries. Employment opportunities can vary based on location, industry growth, and the level of technical skills and certifications possessed by the individual.

What jobs can a sound engineer do?

A sound engineer can work in various roles such as live sound technician, recording engineer, mixing engineer, broadcast engineer, or audio post-production specialist. They operate and maintain audio equipment, set up sound systems, and ensure high-quality sound for concerts, recordings, films, and broadcasts, often requiring knowledge of digital audio workstations and certifications in audio technology.

Job description

DevOps Engineer Build and maintain scalable on-prem/hybrid infra for Infleqtion's quantum systems.

Location: Boulder, Colorado

Compensation: $135,000 - 155,000 USD / year

About The Role DevOps / Platform Engineer

Infleqtion is on a mission to commercialize atom-based quantum technologies that deliver orders-of-magnitude improvements in sensing and computing applications. We are seeking self-motivated, energetic individuals with exceptional problem-solving and technical skills to help drive our Quantum Computing mission forward.

At Infleqtion we embrace a startup mentality driven by results, urgency, and customer-focused innovation:

  • We break down barriers between disciplines, stepping in wherever we can make the biggest impact.
  • We thrive in uncertainty, embracing challenges as opportunities.
  • We move quickly to prototype while never losing sight of the critical importance of systems engineering process and attention to detail.
  • We take bold, calculated risks to drive progress.

Infleqtion is seeking a DevOps / Platform Engineer to support the teams building the control system software for Infleqtion's quantum computers. This role works closely with software engineers, embedded systems engineers, and physicists to accelerate technology development by building and maintaining the infrastructure, automation, and tooling that underpin our systems.

This is a highly technical, hands-on role supporting cuttingโ€‘edge quantum computing systems, where requirements evolve quickly and the 'right' solution is not always obvious at the outset. You'll be working in an environment that spans on-prem infrastructure, lab and scientific equipment, embedded systems, and production software, often simultaneously.

We're looking for engineers who are comfortable operating in uncertainty, who enjoy solving concrete problems, and who can help evolve systems from early solutions into robust, productionโ€‘quality platforms over time. We're open to candidates with different experience levels; strong fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to learn quickly matter more than having every skill listed.

Job Responsibilities

  • Build and operate on-prem and hybrid infrastructure supporting quantum computing platforms
  • Administer Linux systems in both production and research environments
  • Manage servers, virtualization, and capacity from bare metal through VMs
  • Design, operate, and troubleshoot networking across compute systems, labs, and connected devices
  • Work with NAS/SAN and shared storage technologies to support stateful, highโ€‘throughput workloads
  • Develop and maintain automation for provisioning, configuration, testing, and deployment
  • Apply infrastructureโ€‘asโ€‘code and configuration management practices
  • Support and integrate networked lab equipment, IoTโ€‘style devices, and specialized hardware
  • Collaborate across disciplines to support testing, deployment, and operational workflows
  • Participate in incident response and help drive iterative reliability and operability improvements
  • Incorporate security, hardening, and operational best practices as systems mature
How We Build Systems

Our work sits on the bleeding edge of technology. We often start with incomplete requirements and evolving constraints, especially when supporting new quantum hardware and control systems. We prioritize making progress with sound engineering judgment, then strengthening and refining solutions as systems stabilize and scale.

This role rewards engineers who are comfortable choosing practical tools, adapting quickly, and improving systems incrementally rather than waiting for a perfect design.

How We Work
  • Small, highly technical, and collaborative team
  • Close interaction between infrastructure, software, hardware, and research groups
  • Toolโ€‘aware and pragmatic, with a focus on outcomes
  • Emphasis on building clear documentation, shared understanding, and steady operational improvement over time.
Why This Role
  • Direct impact on the infrastructure behind nextโ€‘generation quantum computers
  • Opportunity to work across software, hardware, networking, storage, and embedded systems
  • A technically challenging environment where adaptability and judgment matter
  • Room to grow with the team as systems and platforms evolve
  • Competitive compensation and benefits
