What is a solutions architect?

A solutions architect designs computer and information systems customized to a client's needs. As a solutions architect, you often work with universities, government institutions, and other business enterprises that require an expansive network of computers. Your responsibilities include improving existing system architecture, developing new networking solutions, and testing systems to detect potential issues. You work with developers, on staff IT specialists, and even the everyday users to understand the client’s needs. Your job is either to build a system from scratch, or to design effective, efficient software and hardware solutions and ensure they are integrated smoothly into the existing infrastructure.

How does a solutions architect typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

A Solutions Architect frequently works alongside project managers, developers, business analysts, and stakeholders to ensure that technical solutions align with business goals. This role involves translating business requirements into technical specifications, facilitating communication between technical and non-technical teams, and overseeing the implementation process. Effective collaboration is key, as Solutions Architects must often mediate between differing viewpoints and ensure that solutions are scalable, secure, and cost-effective. Regular meetings, workshops, and design sessions are common to maintain alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solutions Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solutions Architect, you need a solid background in systems design, cloud technologies, and software development, often supported by a relevant degree and experience with large-scale IT projects. Proficiency with tools such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or TOGAF, are typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help you translate business needs into technical solutions and collaborate across teams. These competencies ensure you can design robust, scalable architectures that align with organizational goals and adapt to evolving requirements.

What degree is needed for a solutions architect?

A solutions architect typically holds a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field. Relevant certifications, such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect, can also enhance qualifications and demonstrate expertise in cloud architecture and design.

A solutions architect typically earns a salary ranging from $100,000 to $160,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often receive additional compensation such as bonuses and benefits, and must have strong technical skills, certifications, and the ability to design complex systems for clients or organizations.

LightEdge Solutions is developing the IT solutions that will propel businesses forward over the next 10 years. Using a combination of shared and private/dedicated platforms, LightEdge has been successful in offering businesses alternatives that streamline operations, improve reliability and reduce costs.
If you are passionate about creating real solutions that help businesses with cutting-edge technology, want to be challenged to think out of the box and be in a position where you can impact change on a daily basis, then LightEdge can offer you a dynamic corporate environment built on teamwork and personal responsibility.

Lightedge is seeking a customer-focused Solutions Architect to lead the design and delivery of enterprise-scale AWS, Azure, and hybrid cloud solutions for mid-market and enterprise customers. In this strategic technical role, you will partner with Sales, Product, Engineering, and executive customer stakeholders to develop secure, scalable, and business-aligned cloud architectures that accelerate digital transformation.
The Solutions Architect serves as a trusted advisor throughout the customer lifecycle, leading complex solution engagements, influencing technical strategy, and helping evolve Lightedge's cloud portfolio and architectural standards.
Responsibilities:
  • Design secure, scalable private, public, and hybrid cloud solutions leveraging Lightedge's VMware-based private cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or a combination of these platforms to meet customer business and technical requirements.
  • Serve as a lead technical architect for Lightedge's most complex and strategic customer engagements.
  • Partner with Account Executives throughout the pre-sales cycle to develop solution strategies and communicate technical value.
  • Lead customer discovery sessions, architecture workshops, technical presentations, executive briefings, and proof-of-concept activities.
  • Develop migration strategies that align VMware and on-premises workloads with the most appropriate target platform, including Lightedge's VMware-based private cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or hybrid cloud environments.
  • Leverage the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) and Microsoft Azure Migrate and Modernize (AMM) to develop customer migration strategies, maximize available funding opportunities, and accelerate successful cloud adoption.
  • Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Delivery teams to ensure proposed solutions are scalable, supportable, and aligned with Lightedge service offerings.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor throughout the customer engagement lifecycle, providing architectural guidance and technical leadership from discovery through solution delivery.
  • Create architecture diagrams, technical documentation, reusable reference architectures, and architectural standards that support consistent solution design and delivery. Mentor Solutions Architects and contribute to the development of best practices and technical enablement across the organization.
  • Continuously expand expertise in AWS, Microsoft Azure, and hybrid cloud technologies while evaluating emerging technologies and industry trends to strengthen Lightedge's cloud portfolio and technical capabilities.
Experience:
  • 8+ years of experience in Solutions Architecture, Cloud Architecture, or a similar customer-facing technical role.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional certification is required or must be successfully obtained within 90 days of hire. Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification is highly desired.
  • Strong knowledge of AWS and Microsoft Azure services, architecture best practices, and cloud-native design principles.
  • Experience with VMware virtualization, infrastructure modernization, and cloud migration planning.
  • Knowledge of the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) and Microsoft Azure Migrate and Modernize (AMM) is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise compute, storage, networking, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, virtualization, and current infrastructure technologies from leading vendors such as Dell Technologies, VMware, Pure Storage, Veeam, AWS, and Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience supporting enterprise sales opportunities and presenting technical solutions to both technical and executive stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and documentation skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, influence cross-functional teams, and mentor peers.
