What is a solution project manager?

Solution Project Managers are professionals responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects that deliver tailored solutions to meet client or organizational needs. They coordinate teams, manage resources, set timelines, and ensure that project goals align with business objectives. Their role often involves working closely with clients, stakeholders, and technical teams to ensure project deliverables are completed on time and within budget. Solution Project Managers need strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills to navigate complex projects successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solution project manager?

To thrive as a Solution Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, a background in business or IT, and often a relevant degree or PMP certification. Familiarity with project management tools like MS Project, Jira, and collaboration platforms, as well as experience with budgeting and risk management systems, is vital. Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities help drive teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills ensure that complex solutions are delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced by solution project managers during project implementation, and how can they be effectively addressed?

Solution Project Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning diverse stakeholder expectations, managing complex project scopes, and adapting to evolving client requirements. To address these, it's important to maintain transparent communication, establish clear project milestones, and use agile methodologies when possible. Building strong relationships across technical and business teams also helps streamline problem-solving and ensures project goals remain on track. Proactive risk management and regular status updates are key strategies for navigating these challenges successfully.

Job description

Hill & Harbor Design Build is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead high-end residential and design-driven construction projects from start to finish. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on ownership, structure, and collaborationโ€”and who knows how to balance budgets, timelines, and client relationships without losing sight of design intent.

Primary Role

The Project Manager owns the full project lifecycle, providing planning, financial oversight, client communication, and administrative leadership to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and aligned with design vision.

Key Responsibilities

Project Planning

  • Develop and maintain the master project schedule
  • Manage milestones, sequencing, and subcontractor coordination

Financial Management

  • Approve and code invoices
  • Monitor budget vs. actuals
  • Prepare and process change orders

Contracts & Procurement

  • Issue purchase orders
  • Finalize subcontractor contracts
  • Oversee bid packages and award scopes

Client Communication

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients
  • Lead structured progress updates and project meetings
  • Communicate clearly, proactively, and professionally

Documentation & Approvals

  • Manage drawings, scopes, and client approvals
  • Maintain organized, accurate project records

Risk & Issue Management

  • Identify risks early and escalate issues appropriately
  • Ensure decisions align with overall business and project goals

Team Coordination

  • Collaborate closely with Designers, Developers, and the Construction Manager
  • Align selections, design intent, constructability, and execution

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • Proven experience as a Project Manager in construction or design-build
  • Strong financial and organizational skills
  • Confident communicator with clients and internal teams
  • Ability to lead with structure while remaining flexible and solutions-oriented
  • High attention to detail with a big-picture mindset
  • Tech Experience
