How much do solar system designer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for solar system designer in Minnesota is $34,279.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $31,800.00 and $36,700.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar system designer?

To thrive as a Solar System Designer, you need expertise in electrical engineering, renewable energy principles, and solar photovoltaic (PV) system design, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, and knowledge of local electrical codes and certifications like NABCEP are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help designers collaborate with clients and installation teams. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and compliant solar energy solutions tailored to diverse customer needs.

What does a solar system designer do?

A Solar System Designer is responsible for planning and creating solar power systems for residential, commercial, or industrial use. They assess site conditions, calculate energy needs, design system layouts, and select appropriate solar panels and equipment. Their work ensures that solar systems are efficient, compliant with regulations, and tailored to the client's requirements. Solar System Designers often collaborate with engineers, electricians, and installation teams throughout the project.

What is the difference between Solar System Designer vs Solar Installer?

AspectSolar System DesignerSolar Installer
CredentialsDesign certifications, technical knowledgeInstallation licenses, safety training
Work EnvironmentOffice, design software, client meetingsOn-site, rooftop, outdoor installation
Industry UsageDesign phase, project planningConstruction, system setup

While Solar System Designers focus on creating detailed solar system plans and layouts, Solar Installers execute the physical installation of solar panels. Both roles require technical knowledge, but designers primarily work in planning and design, whereas installers are hands-on with equipment and site work. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job role within the solar industry.

What are some common challenges solar system designers face when working with clients on custom installations?

Solar System Designers often encounter challenges such as accurately assessing a client's energy needs, navigating site-specific constraints like roof orientation or shading, and balancing budget limitations with optimal system performance. Effective communication is crucial, as designers must explain technical concepts to clients and set realistic expectations. Additionally, staying updated on local regulations and permitting processes is essential to ensure smooth project execution and compliance.

How to become a solar system designer?

To become a solar system designer, typically one needs a background in engineering, architecture, or a related field, along with knowledge of solar energy systems. Gaining experience with design software like AutoCAD or PVsyst and obtaining relevant certifications, such as NABCEP PV Design Specialist, can improve job prospects. Strong understanding of electrical systems, local codes, and project planning is also important.
