What is a software manager?

A software manager oversees the development, installation, and maintenance of new or upgraded software for an organization. As a software manager, you coordinate with staff to determine client needs and expectations, establish budget and timelines, and ensure that employees use the product correctly. You may also train company employees on how to utilize the software after it is installed and help troubleshoot problems that arise.

What does a software manager do?

A Software Manager oversees software development teams, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. They coordinate between team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders about progress and requirements. Additionally, they may be responsible for hiring, mentoring, and evaluating team performance. Their role bridges the gap between technical staff and upper management to align technology goals with business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Manager, you need a strong background in software development, project management, and leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, version control systems like Git, and project management tools such as Jira is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding managers apart in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering projects on time, fostering effective collaboration, and driving high-performing engineering teams.

How does a software manager typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities?

Software Managers often juggle both technical and leadership duties, but the balance can vary depending on the organization and team size. In many cases, Software Managers spend a significant portion of their time on people management tasks such as mentoring team members, conducting code reviews, planning sprints, and facilitating communication between stakeholders. However, they may also remain involved in architectural decisions or critical technical challenges to stay connected with the team's work. Effective Software Managers prioritize delegating coding tasks to their team while focusing on enabling productivity, resolving blockers, and ensuring project alignment with business goals.

Job Description

As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer.

Discover Impactful Work

The Senior Manager, Application Science - Software Workflow and Strategy, leads a team that represents the scientific voice of the customer across the Genetic Sciences Division software portfolio. This role sits at the intersection of genetics, AI, laboratory workflows, and software development, translating customer needs and scientific use cases into actionable guidance for software teams.

This leader brings deep domain expertise in genetics or proteomics workflows, strong fluency in scientific software development, and the ability to work effectively across Product Management, UX, Software Engineering, Quality, Regulatory, and Commercial teams. This is not a hands-on software development role; rather, it requires someone who can translate scientific and workflow needs into actionable guidance for software teams. A critical part of the role is helping define how AI, automation, and evolving lab-in-the-loop workflows can make genetic and proteomic scientists more effective by simplifying workflows, supporting interpretation, and reducing manual effort. The successful candidate will connect strategy to execution, helping shape future direction while ensuring teams can act on it effectively.

Location

This is a fully onsite role based at our South San Francisco, CA office. Carlsbad, CA and Pleasanton, CA may also be considered as alternative work locations. Relocation assistance is not provided for this position.

Key Responsibilities

Scientific Leadership

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team that represents customer scientific workflows across the GSD software development lifecycle.
  • Provide domain leadership in genetics and proteomic workflows to ensure software solutions align with real laboratory needs.

Strategy and Workflow Direction

  • Partner with Product Management to provide scientific and workflow input into software strategy, roadmap planning, and long-range priorities.
  • Help define future-state laboratory workflows, including how AI and automation can improve the experience of genetic scientists, and translate that vision into actionable guidance for software teams.

Customer and Workflow Translation

  • Engage with customers, key opinion leaders, and internal stakeholders to understand workflow pain points, unmet needs, and emerging expectations.
  • Translate scientific and workflow insights into clear use cases, requirements guidance, and development inputs for software teams.

Cross-Functional and Team Leadership

  • Work effectively across Product Management, UX, Software Engineering, Quality, Regulatory, and Commercial teams to guide scientifically grounded software decisions in a matrixed environment.
  • Lead through influence while building team capability, driving strong execution, and connecting strategic priorities to day-to-day action.

Keys to Success

Education

Advanced degrees in Genetics, Proteomics, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field, with significant experience in genetics or genomics, including hands-on understanding of laboratory workflows, downstream analysis, and biological interpretation.

Experience

  • Demonstrated interest in and practical understanding of how AI can improve scientific software and laboratory workflows.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and contribute to future workflow and software direction, not just tactical execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and influence cross-functional teams in a matrixed environment, including effective partnership across Product Management, UX, Software Engineering, Quality, Regulatory, and Commercial teams.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with responsible AI, workflow automation, and decision-support concepts in regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory environments, including FDA, ISO 13485, IVDR, or forensic accreditation standards, where applicable.

Leadership Profile

  • Ability to connect strategy to roadmap and drive successful execution
  • Demonstrated leadership in a matrixed environment
  • Ability to lead and develop high-performing teams
  • Strong judgment and comfort operating in ambiguity
  • Innovation mindset balanced with scientific rigor and customer trust

Travel

  • Approximately 20-30%, including customer visits, internal meetings, workshops, conferences, and cross-site collaboration.

Other

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check and drug screen.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $163,100.00–$217,000.00.
