What Is a Software Manager?

A software manager oversees the development, installation, and maintenance of new or upgraded software for an organization. As a software manager, you coordinate with staff to determine client needs and expectations, establish budget and timelines, and ensure that employees use the product correctly. You may also train company employees on how to utilize the software after it is installed and help troubleshoot problems that arise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Manager, you need a strong background in software development, project management, and leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, version control systems like Git, and project management tools such as Jira is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding managers apart in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering projects on time, fostering effective collaboration, and driving high-performing engineering teams.

How does a Software Manager typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities?

Software Managers often juggle both technical and leadership duties, but the balance can vary depending on the organization and team size. In many cases, Software Managers spend a significant portion of their time on people management tasks such as mentoring team members, conducting code reviews, planning sprints, and facilitating communication between stakeholders. However, they may also remain involved in architectural decisions or critical technical challenges to stay connected with the team's work. Effective Software Managers prioritize delegating coding tasks to their team while focusing on enabling productivity, resolving blockers, and ensuring project alignment with business goals.

A Software Manager oversees software development teams, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. They coordinate between team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders about progress and requirements. Their role bridges the gap between technical staff and upper management to align technology goals with business objectives.

Job description

Woven by Toyota is enabling Toyota's once-in-a-century transformation into a mobility company. Inspired by a legacy of innovating for the benefit of others, our mission is to challenge the current state of mobility through human-centric innovation - expanding what "mobility" means and how it serves society.

Our work centers on four pillars: AD/ADAS, our autonomous driving and advanced driver assist technologies; Arene, our software development platform for software-defined vehicles; Woven City, a test course for mobility; and Cloud & AI, the digital infrastructure powering our collaborative foundation. Business-critical functions empower these teams to execute, and together, we're working toward one bold goal: a world with zero accidents and enhanced well-being for all.

The AD/ADAS group at Woven by Toyota is developing a scalable, data-driven approach to autonomous and assisted driving. Our Verification and Validation Team develops strategies and executes testing globally for Toyota's Personally Owned Vehicle (POV) and Mobility as a Service (MaaS) programs. Team members include testing experts that build, execute and refine test methods - in simulation, closed course, and real world environments - enabling data driven decisions about the functions we develop and their integrated performance.  The data and testing feedback gathered from our team is critical to accelerating vehicle development and delivering production-ready solutions based on cutting edge research and development in the domain.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Our Product Delivery organization is looking for a Senior Manager that is passionate about safety and quality, vehicle development, data collection and data driven results. This individual will be responsible for leading a global team in the following areas:

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Own the Verification & Validation function for Product Delivery. Ensure the teams build and execute test methods and environments that are best modern practice. Drive resulting analysis to satisfy the arguments of the release case.
  • Receive decomposed customer-level requirements, or  conceptual and historical design studies and experiments to generate test methods. Support test driven development activities to help elicit requirements and feed results back to definition and functional creation teams.

  • Support definition and execute the endtoend test strategy - coordinate testing levels, modalities (SIM, Closed Course, On-Road, SIL/HIL), ensuring our test approach aligns with Product and customer level requirements and roadmap.

  • Ensure robust verification of system requirements and proxy validation of customer requirements - own the frameworks, ownership model, and RACI for validation so that system, software, and customerlevel needs are consistently tested and traceable - executing

  • Set quality gates, metrics, and reporting for V&V outcomes - define performance and quality metrics, acceptance criteria, and reporting that feed Release decisions, enabling datadriven releases and continuous improvement.

  • Represent V&V in crossfunctional and external forums - act as the accountable voice of V&V with Product Delivery leadership, other AD/ADAS functions, and TMC, communicating status, risks, and tradeoffs to support safe, predictable product integration and launch.

Qualifications
  • 8+ years experience with software systems verification and validation in a production setting, as an individual contributor or team lead (in combination)

  • Proven ability to launch software systems to production with a demonstrated track record. Point to production program launches - inside or outside of the automotive industry - where your team's work played a critical role in ensuring the system launched to market with high quality.

  • Demonstrated ability to build teams, especially with respect to quality-associated deliverables. Showcase how you developed and implemented foundational standard operating procedures leading to higher quality team output.

  • Strong communicator, especially in a global team environment.

  • Automotive ADAS Domain experience is considered a plus, but not required.

For positions based in Palo Alto, CA, the base pay ranges from $161,000 - $264,500 a year.
Your base salary is one part of your total compensation. We offer a base salary, short term and long term incentives, and a comprehensive benefits package. The total compensation offered to an employee will be dependent upon the individual's skills, experience, qualifications, location, and level.
