What does a Software Manager do?

A Software Manager oversees software development teams, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. They coordinate between team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders about progress and requirements. Additionally, they may be responsible for hiring, mentoring, and evaluating team performance. Their role bridges the gap between technical staff and upper management to align technology goals with business objectives.

What Is a Software Manager?

A software manager oversees the development, installation, and maintenance of new or upgraded software for an organization. As a software manager, you coordinate with staff to determine client needs and expectations, establish budget and timelines, and ensure that employees use the product correctly. The main difference between a Software Manager and a Software Engineer lies in their roles. Software Managers focus on team leadership, project management, and strategic planning, while Software Engineers are primarily responsible for coding and developing software. Both roles require technical knowledge, but their responsibilities and work focus differ significantly.

How does a Software Manager typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities?

Software Managers often juggle both technical and leadership duties, but the balance can vary depending on the organization and team size. In many cases, Software Managers spend a significant portion of their time on people management tasks such as mentoring team members, conducting code reviews, planning sprints, and facilitating communication between stakeholders. However, they may also remain involved in architectural decisions or critical technical challenges to stay connected with the team's work. Effective Software Managers prioritize delegating coding tasks to their team while focusing on enabling productivity, resolving blockers, and ensuring project alignment with business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Manager, you need a strong background in software development, project management, and leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding managers apart in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering projects on time, fostering effective collaboration, and driving high-performing engineering teams.

Job description

Overview

As the Senior Manager, Informatics, you will lead the charge to improve the reliability, security, and scalability of Bio-Rad's Quality System Informatics as our Senior Manager, Informatics. You'll set the roadmap for foundational capabilities - connectivity, identity (SSO), accessibility, cybersecurity, and core shared services - and take ownership of the standards and operational readiness that make upgrades and migrations smoother for existing customers. Partnering closely with engineering, architecture, security, quality, services, and support teams, you'll align priorities, communicate key customer needs, remove blockers, and drive high-quality releases that strengthen customer trust and make Informatics products easier to deploy and operate at scale.

Location: This position must be based in Irvine, CA and is hybrid in office Tuesday-Thursday which requires the employee to be located within commuting distance of the office.

How You'll Make An Impact:

  • Develop a deep understanding of customer needs through discovery, VOC, and usage data-and distill those insights into a clear, strategic roadmap for platform solutions.
  • Own and communicate product vision, priorities, and tradeoffs for core platform capabilities (connectivity, cybersecurity, SSO/identity, accessibility, shared services, and scalability), balancing customer value, technical feasibility, and risk.
  • Partner with engineering, commercial teams and support to deliver roadmap outcomes-driving alignment, managing dependencies, and unblocking teams to ship on time with high quality.
  • Set platform standards and release readiness criteria for security, quality, documentation, and supportability-reducing operational burden and strengthening customer trust.
  • Communicate clearly with stakeholders at all levels-translating customer problems and platform complexity into crisp decisions, sequencing, and status that keeps delivery and customer readiness on track.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent; an advanced degree (e.g., MBA) is preferred.
  • 8+ years of product management experience in diagnostics, biotech, med-tech, or related systems roles (product, marketing, engineering, or program), with a proven record of system lifecycle management from product vision through migration, end-of-life/obsolescence planning, and customer adoption in a matrix environment.
  • Strong product discovery skills: you deeply understand customer needs (VOC, usage data, and stakeholder input) and translate them into a strategic roadmap of solutions, requirements, and measurable outcomes.
  • Technical fluency across platform foundations such as integrations/connectivity, identity/SSO, cybersecurity, accessibility, and reliability/performance-able to partner effectively with engineering and security teams and make sound tradeoffs.
  • Fluent in developing and presenting business cases to executive audience.
  • Business-savvy and data-driven communicator: you use dashboards, adoption metrics, and market insights to shape recommendations, influence stakeholders, and guide investment decisions.

Total Rewards Package: At Bio-Rad, we're empowered by our purpose and recognize that our employees are as well.  That's why we offer a competitive and comprehensive Total Rewards Program that provides value, quality, and inclusivity while satisfying the diverse needs of our evolving workforce. Bio-Rad's robust offerings serve to enrich the overall health, wealth, and wellbeing of our employees and their families through the various stages of an employee's work and life cycle.

Benefits: We're proud to offer a variety of options, including competitive medical plans for you and your family, free HSA funds, a new fertility offering with stipend, group life and disability, paid parental leave, 401k plus profit sharing, an employee stock purchase program, a new upgraded and streamlined mental health platform, extensive learning and development opportunities, education benefits, student debt relief program, pet insurance, wellness challenges and support, paid time off, Employee Resource Groups (ERG's), and more!

Compensation: The estimated base salary range for this position is $157,400 - $216,400 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors. This position is also eligible for a variable annual bonus, which is dependent upon achievement of your individual objectives and Company performance.

Who We Are: For 70 years, Bio-Rad has focused on advancing the discovery process and transforming the fields of science and healthcare. As one of the top five life science companies, we are a global leader in developing, manufacturing, and marketing a broad range of high-quality research and clinical diagnostic products. We help people everywhere live longer, healthier lives. Bio-Rad offers a unique employee experience with collaborative teams that span the globe. Here, you are supported by leadership to build your career and are empowered to drive change that makes an impact you can see.
