The main difference between a Software Manager and a Software Engineer lies in their roles. Software Managers focus on team leadership, project management, and strategic planning, while Software Engineers are primarily responsible for coding and developing software. Both roles require technical knowledge, but their responsibilities and work focus differ significantly.

How does a software manager typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities?

Software Managers often juggle both technical and leadership duties, but the balance can vary depending on the organization and team size. In many cases, Software Managers spend a significant portion of their time on people management tasks such as mentoring team members, conducting code reviews, planning sprints, and facilitating communication between stakeholders. However, they may also remain involved in architectural decisions or critical technical challenges to stay connected with the team's work. Effective Software Managers prioritize delegating coding tasks to their team while focusing on enabling productivity, resolving blockers, and ensuring project alignment with business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Manager, you need a strong background in software development, project management, and leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding managers apart in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering projects on time, fostering effective collaboration, and driving high-performing engineering teams.

Location: Franklin, TN—on-site, relocation assistance available, flexible schedules available

Salary: $95,400-$150,000/year* + profit sharing + benefits

*Range depends on skill level and overall experience.

A Little Bit About Us: You might know us from our founder and CEO, Dave Ramsey, who’s given no-nonsense money advice on the radio since 1992. Three decades later, Ramsey Solutions is a household name in personal finance, with a mission to change the toxic money culture for good.

Our Mission: Ramsey Solutions provides biblically based, commonsense education and empowerment that give HOPE to everyone in every walk of life.

Here’s a Taste of Our Benefits:

  • Health insurance (includes plans eligible for an HSA—with a company match up to $500!)
  • 401(k) retirement plan with 4% match/company contribution
  • Annual wellness, counseling and grocery membership reimbursement
  • On-campus cafe with subsidized pricing for breakfast, lunch and coffee bar
  • Dependent care FSA
  • Tons of cultural activities, like weekly devotional, leadership development courses, Battle of the Bands, and one epic Christmas party!

Where and How You’d Work:

Ramsey Solutions Headquarters is located just outside of Nashville in Franklin, Tennessee. We value our strong, unified company culture because we believe the best work is done together. That’s why all of our team members work on-site under the same roof. But work-life balance is also important to us, so we offer flexible work schedules to take the stress out of appointments, family obligations and other needs that may pop up.

While every team member has a designated workspace (with an electronic sit-stand desk), our campus was designed to house a variety of unique work and play zones (e.g., quiet library space, coffee bar/lounge areas, recreational game zone, and outside/patio work and break areas).

What You’d Do in This Role:

We’re seeking a technically exceptional, mission-driven Software Engineering Manager to lead the technology behind one of our teams for Ramsey Trusted Protections, building secure, scalable digital product that help millions of people confidently protect what matters most. From insurance to identity theft protection and other trusted solutions, you'll play a key role in creating experiences that connect customers with products that bring peace of mind and move them closer to financial freedom.

This is a player/ coach role for a proven engineer who loves building as much as leading. You'll partner with product, design, and business leaders to solve complex technical challenges, modernize critical platforms, and deliver seamless customer experiences that drive meaningful business outcomes. You'll spend time in the code, set the technical direction for your team, and mentor engineers to grow their craft while fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

We're looking for a builder who leads with credibility, thrives in ambiguity, and brings positive, solutions-oriented mindset to every challenge. If you're energized by developing high-performing teams, solving meaningful technical problems, and using technology to help people, this may be for you.

You’re Probably a Match If:

  • You have progressed through hands-on software engineering roles, developing strong technical depth and earning influence through demonstrated engineering excellence.
  • You have 1+ years of leadership experience—either formally managing engineers or providing consistent mentorship and technical leadership.
  • You operate at a Senior Developer level or higher, with a track record of delivering complex, production-grade systems.
  • You bring full-stack development experience, with strength in either backend or frontend and working knowledge across the stack.
  • You design scalable, maintainable systems and make sound architectural and tradeoff decisions.
  • You take ownership of major technical initiatives from discovery through delivery and ongoing support.
  • You effectively partner across the business, translating business needs into high-impact technical solutions.
  • You balance hands-on technical contribution with team leadership in a player/coach capacity and communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What Winning Looks Like:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineers, fostering a high-trust, high-performance culture across multiple teams.
  • Drive organizational alignment between engineering strategy and company objectives, ensuring technical investments support long-term business outcomes.
  • Partner with executive Product, Design, and Business leaders to shape roadmaps, define priorities, and deliver measurable results.
  • Establish and evolve technical standards within Java and Kotlin, architecture strategy, and engineering best practices to ensure scalability, resilience, and long-term system health.
  • Oversee delivery execution, improving flow, predictability, and quality while removing systemic impediments.
  • Develop team strategy, including hiring, performance management, succession planning, and leadership development.
  • Use data and operational metrics to evaluate organizational health, delivery performance, and strategic effectiveness.
  • Proactively identify risks and tradeoffs at the portfolio level, ensuring transparency and strong cross-functional alignment.

Other Stuff to Know:

We’re looking for people who are passionate about our mission. This isn’t just a J-O-B. We experience resistance every day because what we believe is absolutely countercultural. We actually hate debt. We actually cut up our credit cards . . . like, for real. Some of us are still fighting our way out of debt, but we aren’t going back. If you don’t know much about Ramsey Solutions and our founder, Dave Ramsey, we encourage you to download the Ramsey Network mobile app and consume our content.

If Ramsey Solutions sounds like a workplace where you can get excited about Mondays, apply today. We can’t wait to hear from you!
