Job description

WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH
Working as part of Global Technology's Consumer Product and Innovation organization, our team supports the Nike Sports Research Lab by implementing innovative athlete* facing experiences. You'll work directly with technical and non-technical Nike Innovation stakeholders, athlete*s, and other teams within Global Technology.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
You are a senior engineering manager who pairs technical depth with product ownership. You know your own technical, managerial, and career direction, and you've learned when to dig in versus when to lean on your team. You have a strong technical background across multiple stacks and stay current on emerging technology, tools, and patterns. You take ownership of your product end-to-end - partnering with stakeholders to define what to build, why it matters, and how it fits into a strategic roadmap spanning a year or more. You build strong partnerships with less technical stakeholders in complex enterprise environments, and you're comfortable translating ambiguous research and innovation goals into a clear, prioritized plan of execution.
To be considered for this position, the candidate should:
  • Have strong technical and non-technical communication skills, including translating business and research goals into technical requirements.
  • Have experience owning a product roadmap and prioritizing a backlog in partnership with stakeholders, balancing new features, technical debt, and shifting business priorities.
  • Have reliable instincts regarding the consequences of complexity.
  • Be an expert in designing, building, and consuming reliable, secure, synchronous, and asynchronous web services for front end utilization.
  • Have experience building consumer facing web UI utilizing modular and reactive UI frameworks.
  • Understand, anticipate, and plan for the differences between analytical data and transactional data, and the implications of each on system design and AI.
  • Be able to lead architectural design discussions, grounded in best practices and lessons learned from your own experience.
  • Practice, evolve, and promote agile development methodologies, including experience acting as or working closely with a product owner.

We will prioritize consideration by these preferred skills and experiences:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field. Will accept any suitable combination of education, experience or training.
  • 7+ years' experience in technology & software engineering roles.
  • Experience leading engineering teams in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Experience partnering with product managers or owners on roadmap definition, prioritization frameworks, and translating user needs into actionable backlogs.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the roles, skills, activities, practices, tools, and deliverables applied at every phase of the software lifecycle. • Experience with front-end frameworks like React, Vue.js, or Angular.
  • Hands-on experience implementing and supporting modern software architectural principles and patterns (REST, domain-driven design, microservices, etc).
  • Experience with cloud architecture, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and related tools.
  • Strong understanding of architectural design patterns and computer science fundamentals.
  • Experience with integration patterns, data movement, and enrichment capabilities, along with an understanding of the enterprise security and privacy requirements they carry.
  • Experience gathering and synthesizing requirements from non-technical stakeholders such as researchers, designers, and scientists.
  • Comfort making data-informed product decisions, including defining and tracking success metrics for delivered features.
  • Proven, results-oriented track record of achieving aggressive goals.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodology.

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON
The team's mission is to provide technology centered experiences which enable Nike's Innovation and Sports Science organizations to engage with a consumer at a scale that they never could in the past. Working within the LeBron James Innovation Center which houses the Nike Sports Research Lab, the engineering team collaborates with innovation leaders, designers, data scientists, and researchers to bring our work outside the lab, gaining access to a much larger and more diverse set of participants so that we can gain better insights into the future of Nike's products.
To accomplish this successfully, we expect you to:
  • Own and communicate a product roadmap, partnering closely with business stakeholders to drive decisions and prioritize the team's work.
  • Translate ambiguous research and innovation goals into clear, actionable product requirements and a well-groomed backlog.
  • Successfully operate within our engineering environment and help it evolve over time.
  • Review technical designs, code, and tests, giving supportive feedback and asking good questions.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that rewards experimentation, initiative, curiosity, and mentoring.
  • Manage the performance, growth, and career development of your direct reports, including setting expectations, delivering regular feedback, and writing performance reviews.
  • Handle the HR administration that comes with people leadership - hiring and interviewing, onboarding, compensation planning, and other personnel matters - in partnership with HR.
  • Design full-stack applications for quality, security, reliability, availability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Practice DevOps, ensuring a culture of testing and releasing software continuously using automation and monitoring.
  • Partner with other engineering and product teams to loosely couple and scale the ecosystem.

We offer a number of accommodations to complete our interview process including screen readers, sign language interpreters, accessible and single location for in-person interviews, closed captioning, and other reasonable modifications as needed. If you discover, as you navigate our application process, that you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, please complete the Candidate Accommodation Request Form.
