Software Engineer Ev Charging information

What does a software engineer do in the EV charging industry?

A Software Engineer in the EV charging industry designs, develops, and maintains software that powers electric vehicle charging stations and related infrastructure. Their work involves creating applications for user interfaces, backend systems, network communications, and integration with energy management platforms. They may also focus on ensuring security, scalability, and interoperability of charging solutions. This role often requires collaboration with hardware engineers and other stakeholders to deliver seamless charging experiences for users.

What are the typical challenges a software engineer faces when developing EV charging solutions?

A Software Engineer in the EV charging field often encounters challenges such as integrating with diverse hardware platforms, ensuring interoperability with various charging standards, and maintaining secure, reliable communication between chargers and backend systems. Additionally, working in this sector requires staying updated with evolving industry protocols and regulations, which can impact software design and deployment. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including hardware engineers, network specialists, and product managers—is essential to deliver robust and scalable solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer in EV charging, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer in EV Charging, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C++), a solid understanding of electrical systems, and typically a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with EV charging protocols (like OCPP), embedded systems, cloud platforms, and experience with relevant certifications (e.g., OCPP certification) are highly valuable. Problem-solving ability, collaboration, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure reliable, scalable, and innovative EV charging solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

What is the difference between Software Engineer Ev Charging vs Software Engineer Electric Vehicle Infrastructure?

AspectSoftware Engineer Ev ChargingSoftware Engineer Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

Job description

Software Engineer (m/f/x) – Object Storage

Our Hetzner Cloud team consists of around 80 employees and works both remotely across Germany and from our office in Munich (Unterföhring).

Object Storage is the newest addition to Hetzner's portfolio of storage products. Although still young, it's already an impressive system: multiple clusters spanning dozens of petabytes of capacity, built on Ceph.

We're looking for a Software Engineer (m/f/x) who is enthusiastic about Ceph and keen to help us operate and scale our large Ceph setups – building the tools, services, and processes that keep them running smoothly and reliably.

This position includes an on-call rotation to maintain our services, which can be performed remotely within Germany.

The annual salary for this position is between €68,000 and €86,500 gross. The exact salary level will be determined based on professional experience and the scope of responsibilities.

What you’ll do

You’ll design and implement a robust and resilient architecture for the object storage product

You’ll write, test, and run microservices using Go, gRPC, Kafka, and PostgreSQL

You’ll design, implement, and operate public HTTP APIs for our customers

You’ll build tooling for maintenance and set up monitoring and observability

You’ll work closely with infrastructure engineers to find the best way to operate large storage clusters

Your profile

You have experience writing well-tested, production-grade Go code

You have experience designing and implementing event-driven microservices

You feel comfortable working with Linux systems and Kubernetes

You are reliable, self-motivated and open-minded

Bonus: Familiarity with the S3 API and storage systems such as Ceph

You are business fluent in English, German is a plus

Mac, PC or Linux — whatever you prefer, we provide it for you.

You will work with a casual team in a friendly and pleasant working environment.

Flexibility

Whether it's working from home or flexible working hours outside of our core working hours — your needs matter.

Further training

We offer a budget of EUR 2,500 per employee per year to invest in your personal development.

HelloBonnie

In addition to an attractive compensation, you will get a prepaid credit card that we will top up for you monthly with EUR 50.

Events

We highly value and promote in-person meetings such as our offsite, our Christmas party, Oktoberfest, and events on other occasions.

EGYM

We want to invest in the health of our employees and partner with EGYM Wellpass to provide an attractive offer for a wide range of fitness options all across Germany.

We pay part of the childcare costs until your child goes to school.

Workation

You want to combine work and vacation? We want to make this possible for you!

Company holidays

With us, 24 December and 31 December are annual holidays. This means, you don’t need to sacrifice your own vacation days.

Bikeleasing

Exercise keeps us fit. For this reason, you can lease a bicycle of your choice through us.

Recommend a friend Bonus

Our way to thank you if you recommended a new colleague to us.

All-round care

For those who love working in the office: Free drinks and snacks, air-conditioned office with height-adjustable desks, charging station for electric cars and much more.
