Is it true that AI will replace software engineers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace software engineers, as their role involves complex problem-solving, creativity, and understanding user needs that AI cannot replicate. Instead, AI tools are increasingly used to assist engineers in coding, testing, and automation, enhancing productivity rather than replacing the profession. Software engineers will continue to be essential for designing, maintaining, and improving software systems.

What are software engineer contracts?

Software engineer contracts are agreements where software engineers are hired on a temporary basis to work on specific projects or for a set period of time, rather than as permanent employees. Contractors often work for multiple clients, are paid hourly or per project, and may have more flexible schedules. These contracts outline the scope of work, compensation, deadlines, and other terms. Contract software engineers are responsible for delivering quality code and meeting the requirements set by the client or organization. This working arrangement can offer more autonomy, but also less job security and benefits compared to full-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer Contract, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Contract, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or proven experience in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages or frameworks required by the contract are crucial, as are any certifications in areas like AWS or Agile methodologies. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you quickly integrate with new teams and deliver results in diverse environments. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute to projects, meet client expectations, and maintain professional flexibility across various assignments.

It's important to proactively communicate with team members, clarify project requirements early on, and stay organized to meet tight deadlines. As a Tech Partner for Collections and Auto Servicing / Managing Director of Software Engineering, you are a seasoned technologist and senior people leader responsible for driving large-scale, business-critical technology outcomes. You will manage multiple technology-driven initiatives and teams, influence strategy through deep domain expertise and technical mastery, and provide expert guidance to senior leaders while setting clear technical direction for your organization.
This role requires strong leadership across cloud-native platforms, event-driven architectures, AI-assisted and agentic systems, and large-scale automation, while maintaining the highest standards of resilience, security, and operational excellence.
Job Responsibilities
  • Lead multiple technical functions of software engineers delivering some of the firm's most visible, complex, and mission-critical programs, with impact spanning departments, platforms, and systems
  • Set technical and architectural direction across modernization, new build, platform evolution, and AI-enabled automation, ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient, and secure
  • Drive adoption of cloud-native and event-driven architectures, with a strong preference for AWS-based services and patterns
  • Partner with enterprise technology leaders to shape strategy across products, platforms, programs, and services, including the effective use of AI, agentic workflows, and automation frameworks
  • Influence and drive change at the highest levels of the firm, fostering a culture of innovation, engineering excellence, accountability, and continuous learning
  • Act as a trusted advisor to executive stakeholders across lines of business; remove organizational and technical barriers and secure resources to help teams succeed
  • Guide teams in the responsible and effective use of AI-assisted development tools, intelligent orchestration, and automation to accelerate delivery and improve quality
  • Champion the firm's culture of diversity, opportunity, inclusion, and respect while developing the next generation of senior engineering leaders
Required Qualifications, Skills, and Capabilities Leadership & Experience
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering and senior technology leadership roles
  • Proven experience managing large, complex technology organizations across multiple locations and time zones
  • Demonstrated ability to influence technology strategy and align teams across functions to deliver strategic outcomes
  • Strong track record of building, mentoring, and inspiring senior engineering leaders and high-performing teams
Cloud & Architecture (AWS Preferred)
  • Extensive hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures, preferably on AWS
  • Deep understanding of microservices, containers, Kubernetes, and service orchestration
  • Strong experience designing and operating event-driven systems (e.g., messaging, streaming, asynchronous workflows)
  • Expertise in building highly available, fault-tolerant, and scalable distributed systems
AI, Agentic & Intelligent Automation
  • Experience designing, evaluating, or governing AI-enabled systems, including agentic workflows and intelligent orchestration
  • Strong understanding of AI-assisted software development, including productivity tooling, automated testing, and code generation
  • Ability to guide teams on when and how to use agentic patterns versus traditional automation
  • Experience integrating AI and automation into operational workflows while managing risk, controls, and compliance
Engineering Excellence
  • Deep knowledge of modern software engineering practices: CI/CD, infrastructure as code, automated testing, observability, and SRE principles
  • Experience leading large-scale modernization efforts, including legacy migrations and platform refactoring
  • Strong grasp of API-first design, data contracts, and reusable platform capabilities
Technical Foundation
  • Advanced expertise in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline
  • Strong grounding in system design, algorithms, and software architecture
Preferred Qualifications, Skills, and Capabilities
  • Recognized thought leader with demonstrated impact in large-scale enterprise technology environments
  • Experience working at the code level, including reviewing, refactoring, or guiding complex implementations
  • Experience building or evolving shared platforms, frameworks, or developer tooling used across multiple teams
