What is a SOC internship?

A SOC internship is an internship position within a Security Operations Center (SOC), where interns gain hands-on experience in cybersecurity. During the internship, participants assist with monitoring security systems, detecting and responding to threats, and learning about cybersecurity tools and processes. These internships are designed to provide practical skills and industry knowledge to students or early-career professionals interested in a cybersecurity career. SOC interns often work alongside experienced analysts and may participate in real incident response activities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SOC (Security Operations Center) Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SOC Intern, you need foundational knowledge in cybersecurity principles, network protocols, and incident response, often supported by coursework or certifications like CompTIA Security+. Familiarity with SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) tools, log analysis software, and ticketing systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set standout candidates apart. These skills are crucial for identifying threats, responding to security incidents, and contributing to a secure organizational environment.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a SOC Internship, and how will I interact with other security team members?

As a SOC Intern, you will typically assist with monitoring security events, analyzing alerts, and supporting incident response activities under the guidance of senior analysts. You may be tasked with researching threats, documenting findings, and updating security tools or dashboards. Interns frequently collaborate with other SOC analysts and IT staff, participating in team meetings and learning best practices for threat detection and mitigation. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to real-world cybersecurity challenges and the workflows of a professional security operations team.

What is the difference between Soc Internship vs Security Analyst?

AspectSoc InternshipSecurity Analyst
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in cybersecurity, IT, or related fieldOften holds certifications like CompTIA Security+, CISSP, or CEH

Job description

About Marvell

Marvell's semiconductor solutions are the essential building blocks of the data infrastructure that connects our world. Across enterprise, cloud and AI, and carrier architectures, our innovative technology is enabling new possibilities.

At Marvell, you can affect the arc of individual lives, lift the trajectory of entire industries, and fuel the transformative potential of tomorrow. For those looking to make their mark on purposeful and enduring innovation, above and beyond fleeting trends, Marvell is a place to thrive, learn, and lead.

Your Team, Your Impact

The MBE (Marvell Business Engine) group is a software and firmware engineering organization within Marvell that develops platform software, firmware, drivers, and solutions across multiple product lines including processors, CXL memory expanders, storage controllers, Ethernet PHYs, and data acceleration technologies.
Virtual Platforms is a dynamic team of engineers and designers specializing in creating cutting-edge functional simulations for System-on-Chip (SoC) designs. By providing accurate simulations and realistic environments, we accelerate innovation and reduce time-to-market. Join us as we shape the future of SoC technology!

What You Can Expect

  • As a SoC Simulation Engineer in Virtual Platforms, your primary responsibility is to create accurate and efficient functional models for simulating System-on-Chip (SoC) designs.
  • You collaborate closely with software teams to gather essential inputs, enabling early-stage development even before physical silicon is available.
  • Additionally, you play a crucial role in diagnosing and resolving issues observed in firmware by analyzing simulation results.
  • Furthermore, you actively promote the adoption of virtual platforms within the company, emphasizing their benefits for accelerated development and efficient collaboration.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related fields and at least 3-5 years of related professional experience.
  • Master's degree and/or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related fields with 2-3 years of experience. Other majors may be considered if you have enough knowledge or experience in this area.
  • Working knowledge of Python and C++. You also need a fundamental understanding of firmware and software architecture.
  • Willing to learn. During your first few months, you'll be coming up to speed on our technology and tools. You'll be learning the ins and outs of Virtual Platforms and our System-on-Chips. Even after you've been here a while, you'll be constantly learning new things because we are on the absolute leading edge of technology.
  • Collaborative with your teammates. We have a great culture here. People help one another and share knowledge.
  • While not mandatory, experience with existing simulator technologies such as Virtualizer, Simics, QEMU or gem5 is desirable.
  • Experience in computer architecture (ARM and/or RISC-V architecture) is highly valued.

Expected Base Pay Range (USD)

111,070 - 166,400, $ per annum

The successful candidate's starting base pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location and market conditions. The expected base pay range for this role may be modified based on market conditions.
