Job description

Position Summary: Responsible for ensuring that non-emergent Medical Transportation Drivers, Road Supervisors and transportation staff are trained and qualified to provide medical transportation to the highest safety standard. Instruct vehicle operators in industry best practices and evaluate trainee and veteran driver skills and knowledge. Instruct Road Supervisors in investigating incidents, accidents, and work-related injuries. Participates in post-accident counseling with drivers and retrains drivers as necessary.
Critical Tasks:
  • Manage new-hire and veteran driver training to ensure all operators are compliant with FTA, AZ DOT, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and community regulations through new hire and refresher training.
  • Conduct regular audits of employee training files to ensure training is current and complete.
  • Reduce preventable vehicle accidents and injuries through training and corrective counseling when safety practices are violated.
  • Provide Road Supervisors with training to investigate incidents/accidents ensuring appropriate collection of information, documentation and reporting of events. This includes taking photos of the scene, interviewing involved parties as appropriate, and assisting with driver, police and related reports.
  • Coordinate and ensure compliance with post-accident and reasonable suspicion substance abuse testing based on GRHC policies.
  • Reduce patient complaints and maximize patient satisfaction through sensitivity training, disability training, and Gila River Indian Community culture education.
  • Instructs drivers on best practices specific to non-emergent medical transportation such as transporting patients using a gurney, blood borne pathogen clean-up and the proper use and disposal of PPE.
  • Design and implement a curriculum that provides classroom training in the SMITH System, CTAA PASS, or other industry standard accredited driver training programs.
  • Plan, schedule and conduct quarterly all-staff safety meetings based on MTS incident/accident trends, evolving best practices, GRHC safety training goals, and patient feedback.
  • Administer behind-the-wheel training and final exams to new-hire drivers.
  • Conduct ride-alongs with drivers to detect needed improvement in assisting patients and in meeting GRHC safety standards, providing appropriate counseling when necessary for Driver skill development
  • Provides retraining and in-service training for drivers as necessary.
  • Prepare accident-related compliance forms, maintains files, and submits data to appropriate person or organization.
  • Train staff to fully comply with HIPAA and all confidentiality regulations and policies.
  • Instruct Drivers on conducting proper pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections for patient safety and road readiness.
  • Instruct drivers so that they have a uniform understanding of services to be performed with patients, their family members or guardians, nurses, clinic staff, and medical providers.
  • Train Road Supervisors and Drivers in passenger assistance and in providing optimal service based on patient feedback.
  • Train staff in the use of vehicle sanitization equipment and medical transportation practices.
  • Train drivers to have a comprehensive knowledge of the transportation service area and the physical location of patient facilities.
  • Create and deliver safety related reports and analysis, including GRHC safety trends.
  • Fulfill the duties of driver as needed.
  • Performs other job related tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2 years of experience providing driver safety training.
  • Valid Arizona driver's license, violation free for a minimum of 5 years.

  • Driver safety training certification, i.e., Community Transportation Association of America/Passenger Assistance Safety and Sensitivity (CTAA PASS), or SMITH System, or other driver safety training certification required.
  • Defensive Driving certification preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of FTA, AZDOT and ADA requirements.
  • Prior medical environment work experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse cultures and specifically the Gila River Community and/or other Native American cultures and community health services.
