Render is searching for a Technical Writer to support Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) in system-development, engineering, cybersecurity, testing, and operational-support efforts within a fast-paced program. This position is in-person at our office in California, MD and involves a range of primary responsibilities, including:
  • Research, draft, edit, format, and maintain technical documentation, including technical manuals, standard operating procedures, system administration guides, installation and configuration guides, engineering reports, test plans, user guides, training materials, white papers, and technical briefings.
  • Collaborate with engineers, software developers, cybersecurity professionals, logisticians, program personnel, and other subject-matter experts to gather, validate, organize, and document technical information.
  • Translate complex technical concepts, engineering terminology, software functionality, system configurations, and operational procedures into clear, accurate, and user-focused documentation.
  • Develop and maintain technical data packages, configuration-management documentation, engineering-change documentation, technical directives, system specifications, and related program documentation.
  • Review and edit documentation for grammar, consistency, readability, technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with customer requirements, applicable military standards, and organizational style guides.
  • Maintain document repositories, revision histories, document baselines, and version-control records.
  • Coordinate document reviews, comment adjudication, approvals, revisions, publication, and distribution.
  • Ensure technical documentation remains current with approved system configurations, engineering changes, software releases, and operational procedures.
  • Support the development of graphics, tables, diagrams, screenshots, and other visual content used in technical publications and presentations.
Basic Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in technical writing, technical editing, documentation development, documentation management, or a related field.
  • Active Secret clearance
  • Experience developing, editing, and maintaining technical documentation for complex systems, technologies, software applications, engineering efforts, or operational processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical information into clear, concise, and accurate documentation for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and document collaboration or repository platforms such as Microsoft SharePoint.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, proofreading, editing, research, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple documentation assignments, meet deadlines, maintain attention to detail, and work independently or as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, technical writing, engineering, information technology, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Relevant technical-writing or documentation experience may be considered in place of a degree, subject to contractual labor-category requirements.
Additional Qualifications Desired
  • Ability to interpret technical specifications, engineering drawings, network or system diagrams, software documentation, test results, and operational procedures.
  • Working knowledge of document lifecycle management, configuration-management principles, version-control practices, and formal document review and approval processes.
  • Experience preparing documentation in accordance with military standards, data-item descriptions, contract data requirements lists, customer templates, or organizational style guides.
  • Experience working in a configuration-controlled engineering or software-development environment.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity documentation, Risk Management Framework activities, system-security documentation, or technical security requirements.
  • Experience supporting Agile development, systems engineering, test and evaluation, or software-release processes.
