Job Summary

As a Lead Mechanical Superintendent, you will play a critical role in leading mechanical field execution for combined cycle and simple cycle power generation projects. In this role, you will provide hands-on leadership for direct-hire craft, subcontractors, foremen, field engineers, and discipline superintendents to ensure mechanical work is planned, coordinated, and executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with project requirements. You will help drive productivity, schedule performance, quality, cost control, and field coordination across major mechanical scopes, including gas turbine, steam turbine, HRSG, balance-of-plant equipment, piping systems, rotating equipment, rigging, setting, alignment, hydrotesting support, system turnover, and commissioning readiness.

Key Responsibilities

Lead mechanical field execution for combined cycle and simple cycle construction projects, ensuring safe, high-quality installation of assigned mechanical systems and equipment. Support the Construction Manager in implementing Black & Veatch safety, quality, ethics, lessons learned and performance management programs. Provide day-to-day direction to mechanical craft, foremen, subcontractors, field engineers and discipline supervision. Coordinate installation of gas turbines, steam turbines, HRSGs, balance-of-plant equipment, pumps, compressors, valves, piping, supports, hangers, rotating equipment and related systems. Monitor, verify and report progress against the CPM schedule, milestones, turnover priorities and commodity targets. Partner with craft, subcontractors, field engineering, startup, commissioning, project controls and construction management to resolve drawing, schedule, quality, quantity tracking, cost and safety issues. Track productivity, installed quantities, progress and cost performance; communicate updates and corrective actions to maintain safety, quality, schedule, cost, turnover and commissioning readiness goals. Lead planning meetings and develop three-week look-ahead schedules aligned with sequencing, system priorities, resources and work package readiness. Confirm drawings, materials, manpower, tools, equipment, access, permits, lift plans, rigging plans and work packages are available for scheduled work. Oversee mechanical work packages and equipment installation while coordinating with civil, electrical, I&C, startup and commissioning teams. Identify constraints, conflicts, shortages, quality issues and productivity impacts and implement corrective actions to keep work progressing. Manage punch list completion, system turnover readiness, closeout activities, daily logs, quantity reports, progress updates and site records to support documentation and commercial recovery. Review craft and subcontractor timesheets, installed quantities, payment requests and technical service representative logs. Monitor mechanical subcontractors for scope, schedule, quality, safety and execution compliance while building relationships with subcontractors, craft leadership, field engineering and project stakeholders. Support extra work authorizations, RFMPs, Contractor Information Requests, field technical inquiries, back charges, out-of-scope items and commercial impacts, escalating as appropriate. Develop and distribute Job Hazard Analyses for major mechanical installation, rigging, equipment setting, pressure testing and other high-risk work. Provide work direction, coaching, training, development and performance feedback to assigned team members as applicable. Apply Black & Veatch standards, procedures, construction guides, lessons learned and continuous improvement practices across assigned work areas. Act in a lead supervisory capacity by directing, coordinating and maintaining accountability for mechanical field execution while recognizing that formal people management responsibilities may vary by assignment. Mentor and develop discipline superintendents, foremen, and emerging field leaders through guidance, training recommendations and support that strengthens field leadership and project execution. Support workforce planning and succession development by identifying training and leadership growth opportunities for assigned supervision and craft leadership personnel. Serve as the Construction Manager’s representative for assigned mechanical activities when required, providing continuity of field leadership, coordination, communication and decision-making. Support site-wide safety, quality, execution, lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives while coordinating mechanical work with other discipline superintendents, subcontractors, startup, commissioning and project management teams to support project objectives, critical path activities and integrated construction planning.

Preferred Qualifications

Construction Management, Engineering, Mechanical Technology, or related technical degree preferred; equivalent mechanical field leadership experience may be considered.

  • Lead Mechanical Superintendent experience on power generation, industrial, or heavy construction projects
  • Combined cycle and simple cycle power plant construction experience
  • Experience leading mechanical installation scopes for gas turbines, steam turbines, HRSGs, balance-of-plant equipment, pumps, compressors, valves, piping systems, supports, hangers, rotating equipment, rigging, setting, alignment, and pressure testing
  • Strong understanding of mechanical construction sequencing, system turnover, testing support, and commissioning readiness
  • Budget, cost control, productivity tracking, and quantity reporting skills
  • Industrial Relations knowledge for recognizing and resolving potential labor issues
  • Knowledge of union agreements and jurisdictional issues
  • Knowledge of company construction guides, standards, procedures, and manuals
  • Construction safety awareness and strong commitment to safe work execution
  • Constructability knowledge within the mechanical discipline and working knowledge of adjacent construction disciplines
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with civil, electrical, I&C, startup, commissioning, subcontractor, and field engineering teams
  • Conflict management, problem-solving, and risk assessment skills
  • Strong communication, leadership, planning, and human relations skills
  • Multi-tasking ability to prioritize, organize, schedule, and execute work in a fast-paced construction environment
  • Project management, conceptual planning, and legal contract understanding, including EPC and subcontract requirements
  • Experience with time reporting systems, cost code labor productivity systems, expense reporting, and administrative procedures
  • Computer skills and ability to use construction management, reporting, scheduling, and productivity tracking tools
  • Experience mentoring and developing field supervision, including discipline superintendents, general foremen, and foremen.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve in a lead discipline role and support Construction Manager responsibilities when required.
  • Ability to lead diverse craft, supervisory, and subcontractor teams while fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing project culture.
Minimum Qualifications

8+ years experience as a Superintendent or Construction Manager on equivalent projects. Valid Driver's License. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Certifications

OSHA 10 certification.
