What is silver engineering?

Silver Engineering typically refers to the field of engineering concerned with products, services, and technologies designed to improve the quality of life for older adults. This multidisciplinary area focuses on developing solutions for healthcare, accessibility, assistive devices, and smart living environments tailored to the aging population. Silver Engineering combines expertise from biomedical, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to address the unique needs and challenges faced by seniors. The goal is to promote independence, safety, and well-being for elderly individuals through innovative engineering solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a silver engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Silver Engineer, you need a solid background in metallurgical engineering, materials science, and experience with silver processing techniques, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with laboratory analysis tools, quality control systems, and safety regulations is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure high-quality material output, safe operations, and efficient collaboration within manufacturing or research environments.

What are some common challenges faced by silver engineers, and how can they be effectively managed in a collaborative team environment?

Silver Engineers often work on projects involving the development and refinement of silver-based materials or components, which can present challenges such as ensuring material purity, maintaining consistent quality, and optimizing production processes. Working in cross-functional teams with chemists, materials scientists, and production staff is key to overcoming these challenges. Effective communication and a strong grasp of both technical and project management skills help Silver Engineers align team goals, swiftly address technical issues, and implement innovative solutions. Collaborative problem-solving and continuous learning are essential for managing complex projects and advancing in this specialized field.

What is the difference between Silver Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectSilver EngineeringMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate degree or technical certification in engineering technologyBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, technical labs, field serviceDesign offices, manufacturing facilities, research labs
Industry UsageConstruction, manufacturing, technical supportAutomotive, aerospace, energy, product design

Silver Engineering typically involves technical roles requiring certifications or associate degrees, focusing on practical application and fieldwork. Mechanical Engineering is a broader, degree-based profession centered on design, analysis, and development of mechanical systems. Both roles are essential in manufacturing and industry, but Silver Engineering often serves as a technical support or technician role, while Mechanical Engineering is more design and development-oriented.

Job description

WHO WE ARE:

Palisociety is a society of unique hotels and residences - Palihouse, Palihotel, Le Petit Pali, ARRIVE by Palisociety, and a growing collection of independently branded properties. Since our first hotel opened in Los Angeles in 2009, we've grown into a nationwide portfolio of neighborhood-centric hotels, restaurants, bars, and event spaces, earning recognition from Conde Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, the New York Times, and more.

We consider our employees our greatest asset: structured training from day one, consistent feedback, and a clear path for growth. We develop our leaders from within, because the strongest hospitality companies are the ones that grow their own.

ABOUT SILVER LAKE POOL & INN:

Silver Lake Pool & Inn sits on a corner just south of the Sunset Junction in the heart of Silver Lake, one of the most exciting neighborhoods in all of Los Angeles, and one that we love. We are proudly surrounded by people who have created a community supported by the community. We are a short stroll from some of the best restaurants in the city and an active art and music scene with indie shops, galleries and cafes filled with locals who inspire and influence the neighborhood's one-of-a-kind culture. Our Inn features an elevated pool deck, 54 oversized guest rooms and suites as well as Marco Polo, a coastal Italian-inspired al fresco restaurant and bar with a dog-friendly patio, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch on the weekends.

POSITION PROFILE:

The Chief Engineer keeps Silver Lake Pool & Inn running safely and beautifully behind the scenes, leading preventative maintenance, repairs, and inspections across the property while treating every guest interaction with warmth and care.

THE TASK AT HAND:

  • Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and inspections on fire suppression, sprinkler, pool, and AC systems as mandated by local code.

  • Respond rapidly to service calls and emergency situations, recording and filing reports as required.

  • Guide and train maintenance staff on proper repairs and equipment servicing and assist other departments as needed.

  • Conduct daily walkthroughs of the property, buildings, and grounds, addressing issues proactively.

  • Keep the maintenance department organized, stocked, and within budget, flagging low par levels to the General Manager.

  • Partner with the General Manager on energy efficiency, preventative maintenance, and cost-saving opportunities.

  • Ensure work orders are completed correctly and communicate open issues to the General Manager and department heads.

  • Support guests directly when needed, ensuring concerns are resolved quickly and warmly.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

Required

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, good judgment, and a team-first, results-driven mindset.

  • Organized, able to prioritize well, and stay calm and effective in a fast-paced environment.

  • Thorough knowledge of AC systems and refrigeration.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a Senior Engineering leadership role; luxury hotel experience a plus

  • Flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed by the department.

Physical

  • Ability to work in varied indoor/outdoor conditions, in different temperatures, with exposure to different materials.ย

  • Ability to work in proximity to moving mechanical parts and electrical currents.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and stretch in tight spaces, and lift up to 50 lbs. and to stand or walk a minimum of 8 hours.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU:

  • Competitive compensation package with medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, plus 401(k).

  • Paid time off, holiday pay, and sick pay.

  • Career advancement and professional development as we open new hotels and restaurants nationwide.

  • Employee discounts across our entire portfolio (25 hotels and more to come!).
