How much do signal processing jobs pay per year?
What is a signal processing?
A Signal Processing job involves analyzing, modifying, and interpreting signals, such as audio, video, sensor data, or electromagnetic waves, to extract useful information or improve their quality. Professionals in this field apply mathematical and algorithmic techniques to filter noise, compress data, and enhance signal clarity. They work in industries like telecommunications, medical imaging, audio processing, and radar systems. Typical tasks may include designing filters, implementing machine learning models for pattern recognition, and optimizing digital communication systems. Knowledge of programming languages like MATLAB or Python and expertise in digital signal processing (DSP) techniques are often required.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in signal processing?
To thrive in Signal Processing, a strong background in mathematics, digital signal processing algorithms, and relevant engineering or computer science degrees is essential. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, and industry-standard DSP hardware platforms, as well as certifications in signal processing or related fields, is often required. Sharp analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills are highly valued. These competencies enable professionals to design, analyze, and optimize systems that process real-world signals efficiently and accurately.
What are some common career paths for professionals in signal processing?
Signal Processing professionals often start as engineers or analysts, working on tasks like algorithm development, filtering, and noise reduction in applications such as telecommunications, audio, or radar systems. With experience, individuals can progress to roles such as senior engineer, project lead, or research scientist, and may branch into areas like embedded systems, machine learning, or systems architecture. The field frequently offers opportunities to collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including hardware engineers, software developers, and data scientists. Advancing your education, obtaining specialized certifications, or gaining expertise in emerging technologies can further enhance your career prospects in this dynamic and evolving discipline.

Job description
As a Signal Processing Software Engineer with Sabre Systems, you will be supporting the Airborne Acoustic Signal Processing (AASP) team that's developing and integrating software and tools in support of one of the Navy's most technologically sophisticated aircraft platforms, the P-8A.The selected applicant will support development for the Many-Channel Programmable Acoustic Processor Stimulator (McPAPS) and the operational acoustics software on the P-8A aircraft.
McPAPS is used to stimulate NAVAIR Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) acoustic sensor processing systems. The signal generation capabilities of McPAPS are used to test how well acoustic systems perform with specific input signals. The selected applicant will apply knowledge of computer science concepts and techniques, mathematics, and methods of statistical analysis to develop software to perform acoustic signal simulation to the P-8A Poseidon Maritime Surveillance and Patrol Aircraft. The Software Support Activity also supports and maintains the Operational Signal and Information Processing components in the platform.
Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Analyze user needs and develop software solutions, applying principles and techniques of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis
- Update software or enhance existing software capabilities using C/C++
- Writing and maintaining functional/implementation specifications
- Apply knowledge of computer science concepts and techniques, mathematics, and methods of statistical analysis to develop software to perform acoustic signal simulation
- May work with computer hardware engineers to integrate hardware and software systems, and develop specifications and performance requirements
- May maintain databases within an application area
- Utilize tools such as Matlab, Python, GIT, and Visual Studio
- Utilize Windows and Linux operating systems
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics and minimum 3 years of signal processing related experience
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities to develop and sustain software that performs signal processing using C/C++ or working from Matlab prototypes.
- Working knowledge of Windows and Linux as development environments.
- Prior experience in developing and maintaining requirement documentation
- Knowledge of Digital Signal Processing & Communications Concepts:
- FIR/IIR Filtering
- Multi-Rate Filtering
- Analog/Digital Communications (FM/FSK/GFSK)
- FFT/Correlation Analysis
- Software Defined Radios
- MIMO
- Intermediate knowledge of Matlab or equivalent tool
- Candidate must be willing to gain and maintain an industry certification that's needed to apply for a Privileged Access Agreement with NAVAIR.
- An active DoD Secret Clearance is highly desired, but the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret Clearance is required.
- Must be a U. S. Citizen
Desired Qualifications/Skills:
- Knowledge of Department of Defense (DoD) Aircraft Weapons Systems and software processes a plus
- Software:
- Python
- Tcl/Tk
- Pure Data
