Job description

The University of Virginia's Facilities Management (FM) Department is seeking a Sign Shop Technician. The Sign Shop is responsible for creating dynamic visuals, including vinyl decals, environmental graphics, name plates, banners, ADA and wayfinding signage, and event resources to be used across Grounds and UVA Health. The Sign Shop Technician will fabricate a variety of signs using computer engravers, woodworking tools and large format printers. Layout and design skills are required to ensure signs meet University branding and national standards.
Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. Including more than 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and Grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.
Duties Include:
  • Fabricate signs using a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Install interior and exterior signage using hand and power tools, construction drawings/floor plans and maps while upholding the overall aesthetic appeal of buildings and grounds.
  • Operate a wide variety of small hand and power tools such as saws, as well as larger equipment and vehicles such as pick-up trucks, tractors, snow blowers, mobile Platforms, and Bobcat.
  • Adhere to applicable traffic laws, operator instructions, required appropriate clothing and protection, safety standards, and federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Perform special delivery services by loading items on delivery vehicles, safeguarding items during transit, personally delivering items, and obtaining the appropriate signature that provides receipt of the delivered items.
  • Perform clean-up in areas after signage installations in buildings, classrooms, offices and job sites.
  • Install/remove furniture for special event setup or remodeling /renovations.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: One year of sign shop or related experience, such as the creation or manufacturing of industrial signs and displays. Carpentry experience in fabrication and installation of signage is strongly preferred. Experience with commercial signage is highly preferred.
Licensure: Valid Driver's license.
Preferred Computer Skills: Knowledge of creative programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign, or other such commercial programs.
Compensation:
The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $18.00 to $22.00 per hour ($37,440 - $45,760 Annually), commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits . Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands:
