Job description

Description The City of Roanoke is seeking two individuals to work with the Transportation Sign Shop Team, performing skilled work operating motorized equipment in support of traffic control and maintenance operations. This position follows a Tuesday through Saturday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional adjustments required to support special events

In this role, the selected candidate will assist with sign and pavement marking maintenance, including the removal and installation of traffic signs, as well as the installation and removal of pavement markings such as thermoplastic arrows, stop bars, and crosswalks. The individual may also set and remove traffic cones while working with the long-line striping crew and will be expected to support traffic control setups for both routine maintenance and special events. The position requires the ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including lifting sandbags, barricades, and other equipment.

The individual will operate a dump truck and light equipment for snow removal and assist with emergency response tasks, which may include working nights and weekends as needed. Strong communication skills are necessary to effectively follow instructions and procedures, along with solid organizational skills to maintain accurate daily field work logs. The role may involve working in adverse weather conditions and in close proximity to active traffic.

A valid Virginia driver's license may be required. Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED, along with one to three years of related experience or training in landscape operations, operating motorized equipment, and performing heavy manual labor, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional duties may be assigned to support the needs of the division.

This position is scheduled for 40 hours per week from April through December, with the potential for year-round employment.
