Job description

Position Summary:

Performs Environmental, Health & Safety functions at the company plant, by performing the following duties.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

The Environmental, Health, and Safety Specialist assists in maintaining the health, safety and environmental compliance at the facility. They will interact with the Management Team, employees and contractors/ vendors, under the guidance of the Environmental, Health and Safety Manager. The EHS Specialist will be responsible for the implementation of programs, policies, and assessments to ensure their company is in compliance with all federal and internal health and safety rules. They may also review reports and findings to monitor performance and detect trends related to health and safety.

Plant Safety

  • Conduct and assist in safety meetings
  • Coordinates and assists in training
  • Help maintain the EHS platform (Gensuite)
  • Filing and recordkeeping of EHS documentation
  • Track all necessary training using the internal tracking system
  • Prepare necessary documents/packs for upcoming audits (e.g. OSHA/EPA)
  • Revise and update EHS policies and procedures
  • Assist with implementation of EHS Regional initiatives
  • Perform JSA, Risk Analysis, Investigations, and implementation of corrective actions
  • Perform EHS audits

Plant Environmental

  • SPCC Plan Tank Inspections.
  • Complying with AQMD permit
  • Stormwater and Industrial Wastewater sampling
  • Tracking of hazardous waste/disposal
  • Coordinates and assists in training

Required Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, OSHA/EPA regulations or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and Microsoft office proficient. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of vendors, and the general public.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Manage the maintenance and implementation of safety programs, compliance plans, and initiatives.
  • Participate in the investigation of incidents, near misses and property damage incidents. Ensure follow-up is done to minimize future exposure and proper records/documents are maintained.
  • Provide administrative support to the Environmental, Health and Safety Manager. Includes, but is not limited to typing/copying/distributing correspondence and various other materials, preparation of various reports, compiling and maintaining statistical information for leading and lagging metrics files, maintains individual environmental files for facility.
  • Coordinates/conducts various compliance monitoring including waste water sampling, storm water sampling, environmental site compliance audits.
  • Ensure the company meets all its legislative compliance obligations with OSHA, CAL/OSHA, EPA, AQMD, ADA, and fire codes.
  • Responsible for review and maintenance of SDS (MSDS) records, approval of new products by consultation with the Environmental, Health and Safety Manger before products are allowed in the plant.
  • Helps develop visual aids and presentations for HSE training, committee meetings
  • Develops flyers, environmental tips and documents used by the department, as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with permits, government regulations and other industry practices.
  • Member of Emergency Response Team during emergency evacuation and other plant emergencies.
  • Completes special projects for all facets of department services on as needed basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience & Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in safety science, industrial engineering, or industrial hygiene preferred or equivalent experience with specialized training.
  • HAZWOPER, First Responder, First Aid certifications a plus
  • Knowledge of Excel, Word and Power Point with the willingness to learn new programs on an as needed basis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have the ability to read, understand, and interpret regulatory requirements such as the Federal Register and others
  • Knowledge of factory equipment, building systems and processes
  • Ability to climb stairs or ladders, work at various heights.
