Job description

Hiebing is seeking a skilled Shopify & WordPress Developer with 3-4 years of experience who is excited to build high-performing marketing and ecommerce experiences in a collaborative team environment. The right candidate is passionate about problem-solving and want the opportunity to do great work with great people.
We use modern tools and agile practices to empower creative individuals to move projects forward and make a real impact. At Hiebing, we foster a culture of curiosity, support and continues learning - where developers are encouraged to grow, collaborate and have fun along the way!
Responsibilities
  • Build, customize and maintain Shopify storefronts with modern theme architecture, including reusable sections/blocks, JSON templates, app extensions and metafields to empower marketers and merchandisers.
  • Develop and maintain WordPress websites using modern approaches (block editor, block themes / Site Editor), including custom blocks, theme customization and plugin integrations.
  • Implement conversion-focused marketing enhancements: landing pages, forms, tracking, structured content and SEO-friendly patterns.
  • Create scalable component patterns that balance design fidelity with maintainability and reusability.
  • Participate in Git-based code reviews, providing constructive feedback and collaborating on solutions.
  • Follow established workflows and best practices for commits, branching, pull requests, releases, and documentation.
  • Work with QA and cross-functional teams to troubleshoot, debug and resolve issues, including browser/device inconsistencies and third-party integration conflicts.
  • Optimize for performance and Core Web Vitals (e.g. preloading, lazy loading, image optimization, fonts, layout shift).
  • Maintain a strong baseline of security-minded development.
  • Stay current with platform changes and industry trends (e.g. Shopify checkout customization and WordPress Gutenberg block improvements).

Required skills and qualifications
  • 3-4 years of professional web development experience, ideally within an agency or multi-client environment.
  • Shopify development experience, including:
    • Liquid templating, theme development, and modern Shopify concepts (sections everywhere, JSON templates, metafields, app blocks).
    • Shopify CLI + theme workflows, environment management, and deployment/release practices.
  • WordPress development experience, including:
    • Building with the block editor, and comfort extending the editor via custom blocks, structured patterns, or Advanced Custom Fields.
    • Theme customization and/or theme development.
    • Strong PHP development fundamentals.
    • Plugin integration and site configuration for typical marketing stacks (forms, analytics, SEO, caching, consent management).
  • Experience working in a team-oriented setting with the belief that teams outperform individuals.
  • Strong debugging skills across browser devtools, apps/plugin conflicts, and third-party scripts.
  • Experience working closely with marketing strategists and UX/design teams to ship campaign work quickly and reliably.
  • This position is hybrid located in Madison, WI. You must be able to be on-site Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday weekly. Working from home is an option each week on Thursday and Friday.
  • Ability to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice-to-have skills and qualifications
Shopify (nice-to-have)
  • Experience building or migrating to Checkout Extensibility and understanding the shift away from checkout liquid customization.
  • Building reusable Shopify Functions and UI extensions.
  • Familiarity with Shopify Storefront API / GraphQL, customer/account flows, and integrating external services.
  • Ecommerce UX patterns: merchandising, collections filtering, search, product discovery, and performance tuning for large catalogs.

WordPress (nice-to-have)
  • WooCommerce experience (checkout optimizations, payment/shipping plugins, catalog organization).
  • Comfort with WP-CLI, Composer, deployment automation, and modern WordPress build pipelines.
  • Experience implementing WordPress hardening practices (secure configuration, plugin governance, least privilege).
  • Experience working within WPEngine hosting.

Modern marketing tech (nice-to-have)
  • Familiarity with analytics/tagging and marketing integrations (GA4/GTM, consent tools, A/B testing, email providers, CDPs).
  • Accessibility awareness (WCAG fundamentals) and experience implementing accessible UI patterns.
