Job description

Description

About the Role

We are looking for an candidate with experience in Microsoft Dynamics Developer to help drive our migration from Dynamics NAV 2017 to Dynamics 365 Business Central. This is a hands-on role for someone who has lived through both worlds: the classic C/AL development model and the modern AL extension-based architecture. You will be a key technical contributor responsible for analyzing existing customizations, converting and refactoring code, planning data migration, and helping shape our future Business Central platform.

You will work closely with our functional consultants, business analysts, and end users to ensure the migrated solution is stable, scalable, and aligned with Microsoft's modern best practices.

---

Key Responsibilities

Analyze existing NAV 2017 customizations, modifications, and integrations, and produce a clear plan for migrating them to Business Central.

Convert legacy C/AL objects to AL extensions, ensuring no direct modifications are made to base application objects.

Refactor customizations to use the event-driven model (event publishers/subscribers, interfaces, facade patterns) rather than legacy code overlays.

Use the txt2al conversion tool and manually review/correct converted code for correctness, performance, and adherence to AL best practices.

Plan and execute data migration from NAV 2017 to Business Central, leveraging the Cloud Migration Tool (where applicable), RapidStart packages, configuration packages, or custom migration code.

Identify and resolve schema changes, deprecated fields, renamed objects, and breaking changes between versions.

Develop and maintain new Business Central extensions, including page extensions, table extensions, codeunits, report extensions, APIs, and permission sets as objects.

Build and maintain integrations with third-party systems (e.g., Shopify, Amazon, EDI providers, payment gateways, WMS) using BC APIs, OData, or custom web services.

Participate in code reviews, testing (unit and integration), and deployment activities across DEV / TEST / UAT / PROD environments.

Document technical designs, migration steps, and post-go-live procedures.

Provide knowledge transfer and mentoring to internal team members where appropriate.

Requirements

Required Skills & Experience

2+ years of hands-on development experience with Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Business Central.

Strong working knowledge of C/AL (NAV 2013-2018) - including writing, debugging, and analyzing legacy customizations.

Strong working knowledge of AL development for Business Central, including:

o Visual Studio Code with the AL Language extension

o Extension v2 architecture (app.json, dependencies, ranges, target version)

o Event subscribers/publishers, interfaces, and the facade/extension pattern

o Page extensions, table extensions, report extensions, and API pages

Solid understanding of the NAV/BC application model: posting routines, dimensions, document flow, number series, journals, item tracking, and standard financial and inventory modules.

Experience with source control using Git (Azure DevOps or GitHub).

Experience with SQL Server for data analysis, troubleshooting, and migration validation.

Working knowledge of PowerShell for NAV/BC administration tasks (deployments, container management, database operations).

Experience designing or consuming web services - SOAP, OData, and REST APIs.

Familiarity with the Business Central Cloud Migration Tool and Intelligent Cloud scenarios.

---

Nice to Have

Experience publishing extensions to AppSource or as Per-Tenant Extensions (PTEs).

Experience with Azure DevOps pipelines for AL CI/CD (build, test, deploy).

Familiarity with Docker / BC containers for local development environments.

Experience integrating with the Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI).

Exposure to Dynamics 365 Sales / Customer Engagement integration via Dataverse.
