Reporting to the Distribution Center Manager, the Shipping Supervisor provides hands-on leadership to his/her shift in the shipping team to ensure that shipping guidelines are met safely and on time, in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead by example and foster an environment of mutual respect and teamwork, while encouraging an open mind and developmental attitude among team members.
  • Organize pre-shift meetings and provide feedback to team leaders, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Lead team leaders in addition to the expedition team, demonstrating natural mobilizing leadership and serving as a team convener.
  • Ensure schedules are adhered to and deal with problems that may arise, applying structured methods and problem-solving skills.
  • Coordinate schedules, products and manpower from different departments to ensure the smooth running of shipping in the plant, using technological skills to optimize processes.
  • Verify that appropriate methods and procedures are used and that quality, safety and environmental standards are met, while managing conflicts and interpersonal relations as required.
  • Lead, train and coach team leaders and other team members as required, applying inventory management techniques and ensuring proper management of mobile equipment.
  • Ensure a safe working environment is maintained at all times by applying company standards and regular inspections, with excellent OHS awareness.
  • Assist in all testing of new equipment, methods and/or products, as well as troubleshooting processes and equipment, while being able to manage individual and team performance.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education an asset (operations management, business administration, engineering, etc.).
  • 3-5 years' front-line leadership experience preferred, with demonstrated ability to manage unionized employees.
  • Forklift license/certification an asset.
  • Bright, self-motivated and clear on future career goals, with a developmental attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to learn quickly, ambitious and come up with innovative new ideas, while being structured in approach to work.
  • Positive attitude and results-oriented mindset, with a natural ability to mobilize and bring team members together.
  • A leader who interacts easily with others and is able to lead and motivate a team to meet the demands set by the schedule, while effectively managing relationships and performance.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, as well as simple mathematical abilities.
  • Work well and support a team environment, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and applying relationship management methods.
  • Flexible to work days, afternoons, nights and weekends as required, with a thorough knowledge of the physical loading dock environment.
