How much do shift one jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for shift one in the United States is $15.09, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.22 and $16.35 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is shift one?

Shift One jobs typically refer to positions that require employees to work during the first shift of the day, often called the morning or day shift. These shifts usually start early in the morning and end in the early afternoon, such as 7 AM to 3 PM or 8 AM to 4 PM. Shift One jobs are common in industries that operate around the clock, like manufacturing, healthcare, and retail, providing employees with a regular daytime schedule. Working Shift One can be beneficial for those who prefer to have evenings free and maintain a traditional work-life balance.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by employees working the shift one schedule in a manufacturing environment?

Employees working the 'Shift One' (first shift, typically morning to afternoon) in a manufacturing environment are responsible for starting up production lines, performing equipment checks, and maintaining consistent workflow throughout the day. A common challenge is managing the handoff from the previous night shift and ensuring any issues are promptly resolved to avoid production delays. Teamwork is essential, as close collaboration with supervisors and other departments helps maintain safety standards and meet daily output goals. Additionally, Shift One employees often interact with management and support staff, which can present opportunities for professional development and advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a shift supervisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shift Supervisor, you need strong leadership abilities, operational knowledge, and experience in the relevant industry, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with scheduling software, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and inventory management tools is typically required. Superior communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills help you effectively manage teams and resolve workplace challenges. These competencies ensure smooth operations, high team morale, and consistent achievement of shift goals.
