What is a service advisor?

A Service Advisor is an automotive professional who acts as the liaison between customers and the service technicians at a dealership or repair shop. They assess customer needs, explain recommended vehicle services or repairs, and provide cost estimates. Service Advisors also schedule service appointments, keep customers informed about the status of their vehicles, and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction throughout the repair process.

What does a service advisor do?

As a service advisor, your responsibilities are to address customer questions or concerns about car repair and suggest relevant repair and maintenance options. You may also estimate costs for the vehicle service, present customers with alternative auto solutions, and communicate with an auto repair technician to explain the customer’s requests. This career has both sales and customer service elements since your duties are to persuade customers to purchase the products and services offered by your auto repair center or dealership.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a service advisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Service Advisor, you need a solid understanding of automotive systems, customer service expertise, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), repair order software, and sometimes ASE certification can be highly beneficial. Excellent communication, active listening, and problem-solving skills help build trust and ensure customer satisfaction. These skills are crucial for accurately relaying information between customers and technicians, driving repeat business, and maintaining efficient service operations.

How does a service advisor typically collaborate with technicians and customers during the repair process?

As a Service Advisor, you serve as the main communication bridge between customers and the automotive technicians in the service department. You are responsible for accurately conveying customers' concerns to the technicians, keeping customers updated on the status of their vehicles, and explaining technical details or repair costs in an understandable way. Effective Service Advisors regularly consult with technicians to clarify diagnoses and repair requirements, ensuring transparency and customer satisfaction. This collaborative approach helps streamline workflow, minimize misunderstandings, and build long-term customer trust.

What is the difference between Service Advisor vs Service Writer?

AspectService AdvisorService Writer

Work EnvironmentAutomotive service departments, interacting with customers and techniciansCustomer service areas within auto repair shops, dealerships, or service centers
Employer & Industry UsageUsed interchangeably in many shops; both roles involve customer communicationCommonly used term; focuses on writing repair orders and explaining services

Both Service Advisors and Service Writers play key roles in automotive service centers, focusing on customer communication and service process management. While their titles are often used interchangeably, Service Advisors may have broader responsibilities including sales and technical knowledge, whereas Service Writers primarily handle documentation and customer interactions. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Do service advisors get paid more than mechanics?

Service advisors typically earn higher salaries than mechanics because they handle customer interactions, estimate repairs, and sell services, often earning commissions or bonuses. Mechanics usually receive hourly wages or flat rates for their technical work. Compensation can vary based on experience, location, and shop size.

Job description

The Role

Our Service Advisors are dynamic sales and automotive professionals who own and create an exceptional customer experience from start to finish!

As a Service Advisor, you'll work directly with customers to understand their automotive needs, recommend the right services and repairs, and confidently convert opportunities into sales. At the same time, you'll manage the customer relationship from appointment through vehicle delivery, making sure communication is clear, expectations are set, and every customer receives a consistently high-quality transparent experience.

This is a performance-driven role with clear sales and revenue goals. We're looking for people who are motivated by results, enjoy working with customers, and want their individual performance to directly contribute to the growth of the business.

Strong individual performance can open the door to significant career growth as Stress Free Auto Care continues to expand.

Service Advisor Assistant General Manager General Manager Senior General Manager District Manager

Advancement is based on demonstrated performance, leadership potential, and readiness for greater responsibility.

What You'll Do
  • Build trusted customer relationships by understanding needs, setting clear expectations, and delivering a consistently high-quality service experience.
  • Meet or exceed individual sales and revenue goals by identifying opportunities, building value, and confidently converting additional service and repair recommendations into approved work.
  • Use strong discovery and consultative selling skills to uncover customer needs, communicate technician recommendations, overcome objections, and close sales.
  • Manage the customer journey from appointment through vehicle delivery, including repair order creation, approvals, updates, and final handoff.
  • Coordinate closely with technicians and shop leadership to keep work moving efficiently, communicate repair needs clearly, and deliver on customer commitments.
  • Manage multiple customers and active repair orders simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-volume environment without sacrificing accuracy or follow-through.
  • Use our customer and shop management technology to stay organized, maintain timely communication, and support a seamless customer experience.
What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means consistently producing strong sales results while creating a customer experience that drives trust, loyalty, and repeat business.

Our strongest Service Advisors:

  • Consistently meet or exceed monthly sales and revenue expectations.
  • Turn technician recommendations into approved work through strong value-building, objection handling, and closing skills.
  • Build a loyal customer base that returns to Stress Free Auto Care for future service and repair needs.
  • Maintain strong customer communication and follow-through, even while managing a high volume of active repair orders.
  • Demonstrate consistent, reliable performance-not just occasional strong sales days.
  • Understand their individual performance metrics, identify gaps quickly, and adjust their approach to improve results.
  • Earn the trust of customers, technicians, and shop leadership by following through on commitments and owning outcomes.
  • Show continued growth in sales capability, automotive knowledge, and readiness for increased responsibility.
What You Bring
  • A proven track record of meeting or exceeding individual sales, revenue, or performance goals.
  • Experience in sales, retail, hospitality, automotive service, or another high-volume customer-facing environment.
  • Strong consultative selling skills, including discovery, value building, objection handling, and closing.
  • The ability to build trust quickly and create customer relationships that lead to repeat business.
  • A competitive, self-motivated mindset-you don't wait for opportunities to come to you; you create momentum, follow through, and take ownership of your results.
  • Comfort working against measurable KPIs and using your performance data to identify where you can improve.
  • The ability to manage multiple customers and priorities at once without sacrificing urgency, accuracy, or follow-through.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Coachability and a desire to continuously improve your sales performance, automotive knowledge, and overall impact on the business.
  • A team-first mentality with the willingness to step outside a narrow job scope when needed to support the customer and help the shop succeed.

Automotive experience is a plus, but demonstrated sales performance, customer relationship skills, and the drive to produce results matter most.

What We Offer

Compensation:

  • Base Salary + Uncapped Sales Bonus
  • Salary: $72,500

Benefits:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Employee discounts
  • Training and ongoing development
  • Clear opportunities for advancement as the company grows
Ready to Make an Impact?

If you thrive in an environment where you're passionate about building relationships, competing, closing sales, seeing your performance show up in the numbers, and envision working for a company who supports long term growth potential and advancement, WE WOULD LOVE TO MEET YOU!
