Job description

Job Definition EXCITING OPPORTUNITY WITH THE CITY OF SUPERIOR. Be the Bridge: Join Superior Police in transforming crisis into care - as a Coordinated Response Specialist, you'll connect compassion with action on the front lines of mental health, addiction, and homelessness response. Purpose and Overview The Coordinated Response Specialist enhances police crisis response.

The Coordinated Response Specialist (CRS) will work closely with officers of the Superior Police Department to enhance responses to mental health, chemical dependency, and homelessness related calls for service. This role focuses on crisis intervention and connecting individuals to resources outside of the criminal justice system. The CRS work will work within the Superior Police Department and report to the Patrol Sergeant.

Employment Standards General Responsibilities Develop and implement solutions for homelessness, chemical dependency, and mental health concerns in the community. Provide referrals to community resources and ensure follow-up support to clients and their families. Offer short-term case management services.

Build and maintain partnerships with shelters, healthcare providers and social service organizations. Support the "Pathways to Hope" Substance Use Disorder Deflection Program through referrals and case management. Work alongside Superior Police Officers to assist individuals in crisis, particularly those affected by substance abuse disorders to provide immediate support and intervention.

Assist with crisis intervention training for law enforcement officers. Respond to requests for assistance from the Superior Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance service as needed. Collaborate with surrounding jurisdictions to develop a unified approach to information sharing and individualized care for individuals experiencing crises.

In some cases the CRS will co-respond to calls for service alongside law enforcement to provide immediate support and intervention. Perform additional related duties as assigned. Ancillary Assignments 1.

Community presentations. 2. Attend meetings with community agency partners as needed.

3. Collaborate with the public and agency partners to solve issues affecting the community. Knowledge Working knowledge of Wisconsin Statutes and local laws related to mental health, chemical abuse, and homelessness.

Some knowledge of community resources and how to access them. The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive knowledge of crisis intervention and the ability to assess when a situation is best handled through alternative services. Skills Capacity to think quickly, remain calm, and adapt to stressful situations.

Effectively train and instruct others in relevant methods and procedures. Proven ability to collaborate with various organizations and community stakeholders. Effective interpersonal and active listening skills.

A high level of intrinsic motivation and enthusiasm for shaping this critical role in our community is highly valued. Ability Communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally, both verbally and in writing. Provide expert advice and direct assistance in crisis situations.

Maintain confidentiality. Demonstrate proficiency in office practices, procedures, and computer software programs. Requirements/Special Requirements Education & Experience Requirements Any combination of training and experience that provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be: 1. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Criminal Justice, or a related field. 2.

Two years of experience related to this role; OR 3. Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Criminal Justice, or a related field. 4.

One year of experience related to this role. Ideal candidates will have at least two years of experience working with individuals in crisis and experience in mental health, chemical dependency , and/or social work. Experience in conducting mental health and or/chemical dependency assessments is desired.

Requirements Must pass a police background investigation prior to hire. Must pass post job offer medical exam for the specified occupation, and drug screen. Must possess and maintain valid driver's license and insurance or be able to provide transportation as approved by supervisor.

Must pass a 12-month probationary period to demonstrate and skills and abilities to perform the requirements of the position. Supplemental Information Reporting Lines CRS reports to the Patrol Sergeant and Patrol Captain Direct Reports None Position Conditions Required to work in the office at the police department and in the field independently and interdependently with one or more officers and/or their CRS partner Perform work outdoors which may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, odors, humidity, rain, temperature, noise, etc. May be required to speak in public to inform, educate, and promote the work of the CRS.

Typical work schedule is Monday-Friday days, but it is subject to change based on need to attend meetings or training, address crisis incidents, follow-up support to clients, etc. The City of Superior Offers Full-Time employees are eligible for Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), Health/Dental/Life Insurance, and Paid Leave. Exempt, but eligible for comp time.
