This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.
About the Job - Your RoleThe Transport Unit provides secure transportation to authorized locations for the adults in the custody of the Department of Corrections. This position is part of the Transport Unit structure and manages the operational concerns of mass transfers, medical and court trips, and high security inmate movement consistent with prison and public safety.
As a Transport Sergeant, you will function as lead worker over staff by enforcing sound safety and security principles, reporting any discrepancies to a supervisor. You will conduct searches of the adults in custody and vehicles prior to transport. The use mechanical restraints may be required to maintain control of the adults in custody being transported. You will maintain key control adhering to the department rules when dealing with restraint keys, vehicle keys, and other keys necessary in completing assigned duties. Maintain and/or report mechanical failures of equipment and/or operational supplies. Process paperwork in accordance with the departments rules and policies. Drive and supervise drivers of a variety of vehicles, up to and including large transport buses. Carry and supervise security staff authorized to carry firearms during the performance of daily duties. Maintain a professional demeanor with the public while ensuring sound security practices are maintained.
Work is performed in a community setting under security supervision. Transporting adults in custody from one facility to another, dental, and medical appointments, court appearances and travel throughout the continental United States. Adults in custody have the potential for becoming angry, hostile, abusive, and aggressive increasing the risk to employee and the public for physical injury, death, and/or being taken hostage. There is an inherent responsibility to aid through recall and/or reassignment during unrest and other emergency situations occurring at the institution.
- Hours of work could possibly consist of a five-day workweek of 8-hour shifts, or a four-day workweek of 10-hour shifts. Transport Officers hours can be flexed: 2 hours prior to their normal start time, or 2 hours later than their normal start time on a daily basis depending on the daily operational needs.
- Transport Sergeants need to qualify on several different weapon systems, meeting the Oregon State Police standards to perform the duties of this job. All applicants will need to qualify and maintain this standard.
- Transport Sergeants need to be Taser qualified or willing to go through Taser qualification and must carry a Taser during their job duties.
- Transport Sergeants must be willing to work overtime as needed, sometimes with minimal notice. There are times when staff are scheduled to conduct courtroom escorting, adults in custody transports, or medical trips where relief is not available, which may require overtime. Staff applying for these positions should be aware these situations often occur with Transport Officers.
- Transport Sergeants interact with the public daily and are expected to remain professional and courteous always while promoting public safety through ensuring sound security practices, maintaining positive control of adults in custody, and providing good customer service to all stakeholders.
- All Transport Sergeants must have a valid Driver's license and a LEDS check will be required. Successful candidates will be required to pass urinalysis testing for assignment to Transport.
- Transport Sergeant transfer adults in custody from one institution to another in a variety of different types of vehicles. Applicable training will be provided on these different types of vehicles.
- Two (2) years of experience in a correctional security setting where your primary duties were the care and custody of adults in custody
- Be able to obtain, within two weeks, an Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Correctional Certificate OR a Correctional Certificate from another government agency
- Ability to obtain a valid Oregon motor vehicle operator's license
- You do not need a CDL to qualify, however, you must be able to obtain a CDL after being assigned to the Transport unit
- Ability to pass Range Qualifications
- You must be a current ODOC or OCE employee (contract workers excluded) to apply.
