What is a senior web designer?

Senior Web Designers are experienced professionals responsible for creating and overseeing the visual design and layout of websites. They collaborate with clients, developers, and other designers to ensure that websites are both visually appealing and user-friendly. Senior Web Designers often lead design projects, mentor junior team members, and stay current with the latest design trends and technologies. Their work involves using design software, understanding user experience (UX) principles, and translating business goals into effective web solutions.

What skills and qualifications does a senior web designer need?

To thrive as a Senior Web Designer, you need advanced proficiency in visual design, user experience (UX), HTML/CSS, and a solid portfolio demonstrating your work, often supported by a degree in graphic or web design. Expertise with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch, and familiarity with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress is typically required. Creativity, strong collaboration, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the creation of engaging, user-friendly websites that meet client needs and business objectives while working effectively with cross-functional teams.

How does a senior web designer collaborate with developers and other team members during a project?

A Senior Web Designer works closely with developers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure that design concepts are effectively translated into functional websites. This often involves participating in regular meetings, providing design assets, and giving feedback during development sprints. Senior Web Designers also help bridge the gap between creative vision and technical implementation by communicating design intentions clearly and addressing any feasibility concerns. Strong collaboration skills are essential, as they frequently provide guidance to junior designers and ensure alignment across the team.

Job description

The Senior Web Designer joins PolyAI's creative studio to define and elevate the design experience across poly.ai and all web-facing surfaces. The creative studio is responsible for translating PolyAI's brand and product story into compelling, accessible, and high-performing web experiences that drive awareness, engagement, and pipeline.

In this role, you will own and evolve the website design system, lead user research and testing initiatives, and set the quality bar for every page that ships. You will partner closely with web engineers, product marketing, and brand stakeholders to deliver end-to-end design solutions at the pace a category-defining AI company demands. It is a rare opportunity to shape how the world first encounters PolyAI-and to build the design infrastructure that scales that experience.

This role reports to the Creative Director and sits within the Marketing organization.

What You'll Do
  • Own and evolve the website design system-establishing scalable patterns, component libraries, and governance standards that maintain consistency and accelerate delivery across all web surfaces.
  • Lead the end-to-end design process for web projects, from concept and user research through interaction design, prototyping, and detailed technical specification hand-off to web engineers and motion designers.
  • Drive innovation through exploration, prototyping, and user testing to continuously improve user experience, conversion, and accessibility across poly.ai and related properties.
  • Embed best practices around responsive design, accessibility, and design-system governance to raise the team's collective quality bar.
  • Run design demos, present work to marketing leadership and cross-functional stakeholders, and articulate design rationale with clarity and conviction.
  • Leverage AI tools and emerging technologies to accelerate design workflows, explore new interaction paradigms, and push the boundary of what a best-in-class Voice AI website can be.
What We're Looking For
  • 6+ years of professional design experience with a significant focus on web and digital product design, including demonstrated impact at a senior level or lead level.
  • A portfolio that showcases mastery of user experience design, interaction design, responsive web design, and design-system architecture.
  • Deep expertise in systems thinking-building, scaling, and governing design systems that serve multiple teams and use cases.
  • Strong command of modern design tools (e.g., Figma) and comfort working at the intersection of design and front-end development, including providing pixel-level specifications and technical hand-offs.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI-assisted design workflows and a track record of raising quality and velocity in fast-paced, high-growth environments.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience running design reviews, stakeholder demos, and cross-functional critiques.
  • Demonstrable B2B experience - ideally technology, SaaS, or enterprise software - including sales and campaign creative for complex, multi-stakeholder buying journeys.
Mindset
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and energized by a blank canvas - this function is being built, and the brand is being rewritten
  • Balances speed and quality without treating them as opposites
  • Strong point of view and able to defend it, but ego-light enough to build collaboratively
  • Genuinely curious about AI and what it means for how brands communicate - not just for how creative teams work
Nice to Have
  • Motion design and video editing (After Effects, Premiere Pro)
  • Experience at a voice AI, conversational AI, or contact center technology company
  • Exposure to enterprise CX, hospitality, financial services, or healthcare verticals

We provide a competitive salary range for this role - which is $145,000-$165,000 (USD) or $135,000-$155,000 (CAD) base salary - depending on level and experience. Please note this range is intended as a guide, not a guarantee. Final compensation will be based on individual qualifications, relevant experience, and the scope of the role.
