Job description

Job Summary

Reporting to the President, the Senior Vice President and Chief Artificial Intelligence & Innovation Officer provides executive leadership and strategic vision for three interconnected institutional priorities: (1) enterprise-wide AI implementation across operations, academics, and research; (2) innovation ecosystem development, including research commercialization and technology transfer; and (3) strategic technology leadership through executive oversight of the Division of Information Technology. The SVP is responsible for driving AI adoption equally across operations, academics, and research; building FIU's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem; and advancing the University's strategic goals.

The SVP fosters a culture of innovation that drives research excellence, operational efficiency, student success, and economic impact across the University's strategic focus areas as defined in the current Strategic Plan. The SVP provides executive oversight of the Vice President & Chief Information Officer and the Division of Information Technology, unifying technology infrastructure, AI strategy, and innovation initiatives under a single executive. The SVP chairs the AI Governance Council and coordinates directly with the President, Provost, CFO, SVP and Chief of Staff, and all Vice Presidents to ensure AI implementation, innovation, and technology strategy are enterprise-wide, fiscally disciplined, and aligned with the University's Strategic Plan.

This individual brings private-sector execution discipline to the university environment, working collaboratively with the university community—including StartUP FIU, the Office of Research and Economic Development, and industry partners—to define the vision and lead the implementation of innovation-driven initiatives that position FIU as a national leader among public research universities and a catalyst for economic prosperity in the State of Florida.

Responsibilities
  • Reports to the President of the University and provides executive oversight of the Vice President & Chief Information Officer and the Division of Information Technology, unifying AI strategy and technology infrastructure under a single executive.
  • Develops and executes the University-wide AI strategy, governance framework, and implementation roadmap across operations, academics, and research equally—serving as the institutional authority on AI policy, ethics, vendor selection, and deployment priorities.
  • Chairs the AI Governance Council and establishes enterprise AI standards, data governance policies, and vendor approval requirements that all units must follow. Ensures no AI platform, tool, or application is deployed university-wide without SVP review and approval.
  • Leads AI implementation in research domains, coordinating AI-augmented research infrastructure (HPC, data warehouses, ML pipelines) with the Division of IT and Office of Research and Economic Development to expand faculty capacity and increase industry-sponsored research across the University's strategic focus areas, accelerating Total Research Expenditures in alignment with the University's Strategic Plan.
  • Builds FIU's innovation ecosystem by positioning the University as a premier research and AI partner for Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, and technology firms. Fosters research commercialization, technology transfer, and intellectual property licensing in coordination with ORED and StartUP FIU, directly supporting the University's strategic goals for external funding growth and maximizing FIU's economic impact to the State of Florida.
  • Leads AI implementation in operational domains—including HR, finance, travel, audit, and procurement—to reduce costs, improve accuracy, and accelerate service delivery, targeting measurable efficiency gains in administrative processes.
  • Ensures all AI governance frameworks comply with federal, state, and Board of Governors regulations, including FERPA, HIPAA, and emerging AI-specific legislation, in coordination with General Counsel.
  • Coordinates directly with the President, Provost, CFO, SVP and Chief of Staff, and all Vice Presidents to ensure AI adoption is enterprise-wide, balanced across research, academic, and operational priorities, and fiscally accountable.
  • Leads AI implementation in academic domains, coordinating with the Provost to ensure every college has an AI integration plan with measurable milestones, faculty have access to AI training and tools, and academic policies governing AI in instruction and assessment are current. Drives university-wide AI literacy and adoption initiatives, including AI-focused experiential learning, micro-credential programs, and faculty development. Fosters a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship supporting interdisciplinary collaboration across strategic focus areas.
  • Manages the enterprise AI roadmap, presents quarterly progress reports directly to the President and the Board of Trustees, and coordinates the University's foundational technology investment strategy in partnership with the CFO and CIO.
  • Performs other related functions as required and deemed appropriate to the accomplishment of the mission of the Office of the President and the University. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
  • Performs essential duties during any emergencies, such as hurricanes, storms and/or any other University emergency closing. Is expected to be available to report to work as needed during University emergency closings with appropriate notification by department administrator.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Business Administration, Innovation Management, or a closely related field and ten years of progressive leadership experience in technology strategy, AI/ML implementation, or digital transformation in corporate, consulting, or technology industry settings; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate specialization and twelve years of equivalent experience. At least five years in a senior executive role with enterprise-wide strategic responsibility, preferably in a private-sector or corporate environment.

Desired Qualifications

Direct experience deploying Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning solutions at enterprise scale in a Fortune 500 company, major technology firm, or comparable large complex organization. Prior C-suite or senior executive experience leading enterprise-wide digital transformation or AI implementation in a corporate environment strongly preferred. Demonstrated success building industry partnerships, driving technology commercialization, and delivering measurable business outcomes through innovation. Experience with innovation ecosystem development, venture creation, or startup incubation is highly desirable.
