A respected law firm is seeking a Senior Associate Tax Attorney to join its growing tax controversy practice in Bethesda, Maryland.

This attorney will work with business owners and individuals facing complex tax problems, including unfiled tax returns, issues arising from previous filings, IRS or state assessments, penalties, fines, and other tax-related disputes.

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney who enjoys tax controversy, client advocacy, negotiation, and finding solutions to complicated tax issues.

Responsibilities

  • Develop strategies to appeal, negotiate, reduce, or resolve tax liabilities.
  • Represent clients before the IRS and state taxing authorities.
  • Prepare and review petitions, appeals, correspondence, legal documents, and other tax controversy filings.

  • Active Maryland bar admission, or eligibility for admission.
  • Experience in tax law, tax controversy, tax litigation, or a related practice area.
  • Strong understanding of federal and/or state tax laws and administrative procedures.
  • Experience handling tax assessments, audits, appeals, collections, penalties, delinquent returns, or other tax disputes is highly preferred.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Strong ability to work independently while collaborating with attorneys and other professionals.
  • Client-focused approach with strong negotiation and problem-solving skills.
Why This Opportunity?

This role provides the opportunity to work on meaningful and sophisticated tax controversy matters while helping business owners resolve significant tax problems. The ideal candidate will enjoy taking complex situations—such as unfiled returns, prior filing issues, fines, and assessments—and developing effective strategies to bring those matters to resolution.
