Handler Law, LLP is a nationwide and internationally recognized boutique law practice that is widely known as one of the premier private client law firms in the world. Based in downtown Chicago, the firm focuses on Business & Corporate Law, Family Offices, Private Client Trusts & Estates, Taxation, nonprofits, entertainment and sports law. We serve primarily affluent families, family offices and privately held companies.  Currently we are expanding. Handler Law, LLP is seeking to hire an experienced Senior Tax Associate, Senior Counsel, to join our team.   The ideal senior candidate will have strong skills within the realm of working in Tax, including gift and estate tax planning and have at least ten (10) years of experience advising high-net-worth individuals, families, and closely held businesses on income tax compliance, tax planning and tax controversy. This individual will play a key role in managing client relationships within a private client law environment. Candidates should possess superior communication, drafting, writing and research skills and excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills. 

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise on, prepare, and/or review federal and state income tax compliance for individuals, partnerships, S corporations, non-profit entities, C corporations, and trusts.
  • Review existing business structures to identify potential liability risks and tax leakage.
  • Coordinate with accountants, investment advisors, fiduciaries, and external counsel to execute comprehensive planning solutions.
  • Assist with IRS audits, notices, and voluntary disclosures, and manage related correspondence and negotiations.
  • Stay current with changes in tax laws and regulations; communicate relevant updates to clients and internal teams.

Requirements:

  • Active license to practice law in Illinois.
  • LL.M. in Taxation, CPA, CFP, or other relevant designations preferred.
  • Minimum ten (10) years of progressive experience in income tax law, income tax compliance, estate planning, and/or tax controversy.
  • Strong drafting, analytical, and client-facing skills.
  • Experience advising or working within a family office, private client law firm, or wealth management context preferred.
