What does a senior sustainability manager do?

A Senior Sustainability Manager leads the development and implementation of strategies to improve an organization's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. They oversee sustainability initiatives, such as reducing carbon emissions, improving resource efficiency, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. These managers often collaborate with various departments, engage stakeholders, and report on progress to executives and the public. Their goal is to integrate sustainable practices into business operations to create long-term value for both the company and society.

How does a senior sustainability manager typically collaborate with other departments to drive company-wide sustainability initiatives?

A Senior Sustainability Manager frequently works cross-functionally, partnering with departments such as operations, procurement, marketing, and compliance to integrate sustainability goals into broader business strategies. This often involves leading committees, facilitating sustainability training, and aligning departmental objectives with environmental and social responsibility targets. Effective communication and stakeholder engagement are essential, as the role requires balancing diverse priorities and securing buy-in from both leadership and frontline teams. Collaboration is key to successfully implementing sustainability initiatives that have measurable impact across the organization.

Are you the dynamic Senior Sustainability Engineer we are looking for?
If you want to feel the satisfaction of really making a difference, with every decision you make, you've come to the right place.
That's because, at Skanska, we don't just build bridges. Or office buildings. Or data centers. We make a positive impact in people's lives - shaping the way we all live, work, and connect, now and for generations to come - and we want you to do it together with us.

The Senior Sustainability Engineer will work alongside the project team to ensure they properly track and document project sustainability goals towards eventual certification-based efforts, whether LEED, WELL, Living Building Challenge, or others. Another key part of this role will be to lead the collection and reporting of carbon data in response to our commitment to hit milestone reduction goals in 2030 and 2045 and to coach junior Sustainability Engineers and project teams on reduction tactics. The position will also support training, and research for the Green Project Solutions team, and will help to train and assist in the success of the junior Sustainability Engineers.
Senior Sustainability Engineer Required Qualifications:
  • 4+ years of building construction or sustainability-related experience
  • 3+ years of experience with the LEED certification process for a minimum of two building projects
  • 1+ years of experience benchmarking used in carbon emissions tracking concerning construction processes;
  • 1+ years of experience applying common terminology used in LEED and other certification programs;
  • 1+ years of experience creating forms, templates, and meeting materials
  • Bachelor's Degree - Business Administration, Public Administration, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Urban Planning, Architecture, or another job-related field or 6 years equivalent experience plus a minimum of 4 years prior relevant experience.

Currently, the company is not considering applicants for this position who now or in the future require employment sponsorship by the company.
