What does a Senior Structural Engineer do?

A Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and comply with relevant codes. They lead project teams, review calculations and drawings, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers. Additionally, they collaborate with architects, contractors, and clients to deliver projects on time and within budget, while also addressing any structural issues that may arise during construction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Structural Engineer, you need an accredited engineering degree, professional licensure (such as PE or Chartered Engineer), and deep expertise in structural analysis and design. Role description:

We are searching for a Senior Structural Engineer to join our growing Resilience Water Team in Texas!

The Senior Structural Engineer, with the support of a strong nationally recognized technical staff, will utilize their expertise and technical knowledge of structural design & construction engineering to successfully execute projects within the Municipal & Industrial Water/Wastewater and Water Resources infrastructure design & construction engineering consulting markets.

Role accountabilities:

In this role you will lead water / wastewater design engineering and construction projects. You will be responsible for leading structural condition assessments, the production of design calculations, technical reports, permitting, detailed design and engineering plans and specifications for water / wastewater projects including new facilities, plant upgrades, storage facilities, pipelines, storm water systems, pump stations, and distribution / collection systems.

The role will lead structural design and serve as Engineer of Record on projects, managing related budgets, schedules, deliverables, and the development of plans, permit checklists, and scopes of work while coordinating timely project completion and submissions. This position plays a strategic role in growing the Structural Engineering practice in Texas and the West region and oversees entry-level and junior staff. Responsibilities include organizing and conducting structural investigations, calculations, and planning work; researching alternative design approaches, site conditions, and regulatory specifications; and leading the development of calculations, plans, specifications, RFPs, and other contract documents.

As a Senior Structural Engineer you will work directly with multiple engineering disciplines, project staff, clients, and subcontractors throughout the project life cycle, requiring strong communication skills for coordination, presentations, and report preparation. You will exercise judgment in selecting and adapting engineering alternatives, manage the production of construction drawings, specifications, bid packages, and cost estimates, and may travel for site visits, client meetings, planning, or construction oversight as needed.

Proficiency in utilizing AutoCAD/REVIT software is also essential, as the job entails working with these tools to create and modify design documentation accurately.
  • Moreover, the candidate should have an excellent working knowledge of building codes and standards, including but not limited to IBC (International Building Code), ACI (American Concrete Institute), and others relevant to the industry. This familiarity with regulatory requirements is essential for ensuring compliance and adherence to industry best practices in all aspects of the structural design and analysis process.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications

  • 10 years of structural engineering experience in Water / Wastewater.
  • Bachelor's degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (Structural emphasis).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Texas in Structural or Civil/Structural with ability to obtain license in other preferred states within 6 months.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred qualifications for this job position include a Master's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering. Additionally, the ideal candidate should have experience in structural engineering within the Water/Wastewater sector, preferably at least 15 years of practical involvement in relevant projects.

Holding a Structural Engineer (SE) License, along with an NCEES Record featuring a mention of MLSE (Multi-Lateral Structural Engineer), is also a plus.

Ideally, applicants should have successfully completed the NCEES 16-Hour structural exam. Lastly, a strong level of proficiency in MATHCAD is preferred, as this software tool plays a vital role in various structural engineering calculations and analyses.
