Senior Software Developers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and maintain complex software applications. They often lead development teams, mentor junior developers, and make critical architectural decisions. Their responsibilities include writing high-quality code, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring that software projects meet performance and security standards. With deep expertise in programming languages and software engineering principles, they play a key role in delivering successful technology solutions for organizations.

What does a senior software developer do?

As a Senior Software Developer, you’ll typically be responsible for leading complex development projects, designing technical solutions, and mentoring junior team members. Daily tasks often include writing and reviewing code, participating in architecture discussions, collaborating with cross-functional teams (such as QA, product management, and DevOps), and troubleshooting high-level technical issues. You may also be involved in setting coding standards, conducting code reviews, and helping to plan sprints or project roadmaps.

Job description

Join Our Software DevelopmentΒ Team!

RTO National is seeking an experienced Senior Full-Stack Software DeveloperΒ to design, build, and improve the custom software systems that support our business. This hands-on role is involved across the full software lifecycle, from solution planning and development through testing, documentation, deployment, and maintenance.

The ideal candidate is a well-rounded developer who enjoys solving complex business problems, taking ownership of solutions, and working across multiple areas of the technology stack. We are looking for someone who combines strong technical depth with practical judgment, collaboration, and adaptability; can help guide others toward scalable, maintainable solutions; and is comfortable using AI-enabled development tools while independently evaluating the quality, accuracy, and maintainability of the work they produce.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, document, and maintain custom software applications and features supporting internal business operations.
  • Take a key role in planning and designing solutions for complex technical and business challenges, including identifying risks, evaluating alternatives, and recommending the best path forward.
  • Independently lead complex feature development while coordinating with other developers when work requires broader team involvement.
  • Conduct comprehensive code reviews, evaluating not only code quality but also architecture, maintainability, performance, security, and alignment with business requirements.
  • Develop scalable, maintainable, and well-documented solutions that meet both immediate business needs and longer-term technology objectives.
  • Build a strong understanding of company operations, specialty finance processes, user workflows, and how internal systems support the business.
  • Partner with technical and business team members to ensure development decisions align with broader company priorities.
  • Identify potential technical concerns, dependencies, and scalability issues before they become significant problems.
  • Stay current on evolving technologies and development practices, evaluate their potential value, and recommend or implement improvements where appropriate.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of software development best practices, including system architecture, design patterns, performance, security, and technical problem-solving.
  • Actively evaluate and incorporate appropriate AI-enabled development tools and practices while maintaining strong standards for accuracy, security, maintainability, and code quality.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to other developers and contribute to the continued development of team standards and practices.

Core Competencies

  • Technical Problem-Solving: Able to break down complex problems, evaluate multiple approaches, and develop practical, scalable solutions.
  • Business Acumen: Interested in understanding how the business operates and using that knowledge to make better technical decisions.
  • Quality & Attention to Detail: Produces thoughtful, reliable work while recognizing when speed and practicality should take priority over unnecessary perfection.
  • Creativity & Innovation: Looks for better ways to solve problems and is willing to evaluate new technologies, tools, and approaches.
  • Collaboration: Works effectively with developers, business partners, and other stakeholders to reach shared outcomes.
  • Ownership & Initiative: Takes responsibility for work from planning through completion and follows through on commitments.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in an evolving environment where priorities, technologies, and business needs may change.
  • Planning & Organization: Able to manage complex development work, anticipate dependencies, and maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Technical Judgment: Understands how individual development decisions affect the broader technology environment and can identify risks before they become larger issues.
  • Continuous Learning: Maintains current knowledge of software development practices, emerging technologies, and the evolving role of AI in software development

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or certificate in software development, web development, computer science, or a related technical discipline required; bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience required, with 8+ years or comparable senior-level experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated full-stack development experience and the ability to contribute across multiple layers of an application and technology stack.
  • Strong experience designing and developing maintainable, scalable software solutions and working through the full software development lifecycle.
  • Experience participating in technical design decisions, architecture discussions, complex feature development, and code review.
  • Strong understanding of development best practices related to system architecture, design patterns, application performance, security, testing, and maintainability.
  • Experience with PHP, Laravel, Vue.js, MySQL, and AWS is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Linux server administration and modern development tooling; experience with Docker is a plus.
  • Mobile or application development experience, including familiarity with Capacitor, is a plus.
  • Exposure to UI/UX design principles and an ability to consider the end-user experience when developing solutions is highly valued.
  • Comfortable incorporating AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude Code or similar technologies, into development workflows while independently reviewing output for quality, accuracy, security, and maintainability.
  • Experience working within a financial services, specialty finance, or similar business environment is beneficial, particularly within a mid-sized organization where developers contribute across multiple technical and business areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to take sustained ownership of systems, solutions, and long-term technical outcomes.

RTO National Benefits

  • Competitive pay and bonus structures
  • Paid time off, company-paid holidays, and one floating holiday
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage
  • Employer-paid life insurance
  • Health Savings Account eligibility
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • 401(k) retirement plan with Safe Harbor employer matching
