Senior Remote Biomedical Engineer information

What are some unique challenges faced by Senior Remote Biomedical Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Senior Remote Biomedical Engineers often face challenges related to remote troubleshooting and collaboration, as they may need to diagnose complex medical equipment issues without being on-site. To address these, strong communication skills, proficiency in remote diagnostic tools, and the ability to guide on-site personnel are essential. Additionally, staying updated with the latest biomedical technologies and maintaining clear documentation help ensure efficient problem-solving and team coordination, even from a distance.

What does a Senior Remote Biomedical Engineer do?

A Senior Remote Biomedical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining medical devices and equipment, often working from a remote location. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that medical technologies meet regulatory standards and address clinical needs. Their work may include troubleshooting issues, analyzing data, and providing technical support to healthcare professionals. Being remote, they use digital tools to communicate, manage projects, and sometimes perform virtual diagnostics or training. Typically, they have significant experience in the biomedical field and possess strong problem-solving and communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Remote Biomedical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Remote Biomedical Engineer, you need advanced knowledge in biomedical engineering principles, relevant engineering degrees, and several years of hands-on experience in medical device development or healthcare technology. Familiarity with CAD software, biomedical instrumentation, regulatory compliance standards (such as FDA or ISO 13485), and remote collaboration tools is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication skills, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring innovative, compliant, and reliable solutions in a distributed work environment where independent initiative and clear coordination drive success.

What is the difference between Senior Remote Biomedical Engineer vs Biomedical Equipment Technician?

AspectSenior Remote Biomedical EngineerBiomedical Equipment Technician
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Biomedical Engineering, certifications like CBETAssociate's degree or certification in biomedical technology
Work EnvironmentRemote, project-based, design and development focusOn-site, maintenance, repair, and calibration of equipment
Industry UsageResearch institutions, medical device companies, biotech firmsHospitals, clinics, medical equipment service providers

The main difference is that Senior Remote Biomedical Engineers focus on designing, developing, and overseeing biomedical systems remotely, often requiring advanced degrees and certifications. In contrast, Biomedical Equipment Technicians primarily work on the hands-on maintenance and repair of medical devices on-site. Both roles are essential in healthcare, but they differ in responsibilities, work environment, and required qualifications.

Job description

About the Role
Insight Surgery help surgeons plan the most complex surgeries, designing and manufacturing cutting edge patient-specific medical devices including anatomical models, surgical cutting guides and complex custom implants partnering with a number of large institutions across the USA and with the NHS in the UK. This is achieved by delivering a unique Point of Care service model.
We are looking for a passionate Senior Biomedical Engineer to join our growing team and help design patient-specific medical devices and surgical solutions. In this role, you will transform medical imaging data into custom surgical cutting and drilling guides, using planning tools that directly support surgeons and improve patient outcomes.
You will work closely with surgeons, engineers and manufacturing teams to take patient-specific solutions from concept to delivery. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex anatomical challenges, working with cutting-edge 3D technologies and making a real impact in the operating room.
The successful candidate can expect a challenging and rewarding role, making a positive difference to patient outcomes in some of the USA's leading hospitals. Our innovative way of working directly at the point of care allows for a level of autonomy and responsibility, providing staff with a structured career development pathway.
This role ideally will have a successful candidate based at our Houston, Texas office, however remote working is another option. It will nationally, indirectly report to Insight Surgery's USA Team Lead based in Houston and directly to the Head of Engineering based in the UK.
Responsibilities
  • Project manage and own the end-to-end design workflow, ensuring compliance with the ISO 13485 certified Quality Management System.
  • Use validated segmentation software to convert patient scan data into 3D anatomical models for clinical cases.
  • Collaborate with surgeons and clinical teams throughout planning and design to deliver patient-specific medical devices.
  • Use CAD to design solutions for a broad range of clinical indications.
  • Lead case discussions, communicate design concepts and technical solutions clearly and effectively to ensure on-time delivery for surgery.
  • Prepare the design files for 3D printing and production workflows, print devices to a high standard, then complete post-processing, finishing and inspection.
  • Carry out routine maintenance and calibration of facility equipment in line with the scheduled plan.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Attend surgical cases, where required, to support surgeons.
  • Improve internal workflows and support with training initiatives, via contributions to the development of standardised design procedures and best practices.
  • Contribute to audit readiness and support third-party audits via strong knowledge of company procedures and compliance processes.

Qualifications & requirements
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering or a similar related discipline.
  • Experience using segmentation software, ideally focused on the design or manufacture of patient-specific surgical guides.
  • Experience working within a Quality Management System (e.g., ISO 13485) and producing appropriate technical documentation.
  • Strong industry experience designing patient-specific surgical guides using CAD.
  • Good knowledge of human anatomy and orthopaedic surgical procedures.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills
  • Materialise Mimics experience, including segmentation of CT and MRI datasets.
  • Geomagic Freeform experience.
  • Experience with 3D printing technologies (FDM, SLA and SLS) and associated post-processing/inspection.
  • Experience designing patient-specific solutions for orthopaedic oncology cases.
  • Strong project management and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Experience supporting and mentoring junior engineers.

Salary & Benefits
  • Core working hours 0900-1800, Monday to Friday.
  • 18 days annual holiday allowance plus 9 vacation days.
  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Health insurance, including dental and vision.
  • Performance-based bonus scheme paid bi-annually, that provides up to 12% of the employees per annum salary.
  • 3% of salary per annum employer contribution toward 401k pension.
  • Discretionary yearly salary review/increase.
  • Future opportunities to join Insight Surgery's Company Share Options scheme.
