What is a senior programmer?

Senior Programmers are experienced software developers who take on advanced coding tasks and often provide technical leadership within their teams. They are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex software systems, as well as mentoring junior developers. Senior Programmers typically have strong problem-solving skills, deep knowledge of programming languages, and experience with software architecture. They may also be involved in code reviews, setting best practices, and collaborating with other departments to deliver high-quality software solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior programmer?

To thrive as a Senior Programmer, you need advanced proficiency in programming languages, solid software development experience, and often a relevant degree or equivalent expertise. Familiarity with frameworks, version control systems like Git, and agile development tools is typically required, and certifications in cloud platforms or specific technologies can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills enable effective collaboration and mentorship within development teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering robust, scalable solutions and driving technical excellence in complex projects.

How do senior programmers typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on team productivity?

Senior Programmers often play a key mentorship role by guiding junior developers through code reviews, pair programming, and sharing best practices. They provide technical leadership and help troubleshoot complex issues, ensuring code quality and knowledge transfer across the team. This mentorship not only fosters professional growth for junior members but also contributes to stronger team cohesion and faster problem-solving, ultimately boosting overall productivity and project success.

What is the difference between Senior Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectSenior ProgrammerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; extensive coding experienceBachelor's degree often preferred; coding skills essential
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, project-based work, often in tech or software companiesSimilar environments; involved in designing, coding, testing software
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and other industries requiring software solutionsCommonly used in software firms, startups, and corporate IT departments

While both roles involve coding and software development, a Senior Programmer typically has more experience, takes on complex tasks, and may mentor junior staff. A Software Developer focuses on designing and building software applications, often with less emphasis on leadership or advanced technical oversight.

What do senior programmers do?

Senior programmers design, develop, and maintain software applications, often leading projects and mentoring junior team members. They analyze user requirements, write efficient code, troubleshoot issues, and ensure software quality using programming languages and development tools. Their role also involves reviewing code, optimizing performance, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver technical solutions.

WHO WE ARE
Altitude Aerospace delivers engineering and certification solutions for commercial and VIP aircraft programs worldwide. With FAA DER, EASA DOA, and TCCA DAO approvals, we support customers from concept through certification and in-service. Our 150+ person team across the US, Canada, and France works on programs for major OEMs and completion centers globally. We offer 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, SIMPLE IRA retirement plan, paid vacation and PTO, and 8 paid holidays.
THE ROLE
Lead the design, integration, and validation of complex electrical systems for aerospace applications. As a senior engineer, you'll provide technical leadership across the full product life cycle, from system architecture through certification, resolving high impact challenges on active aircraft programs. This is a hands-on role for an experienced electrical engineer ready to own aircraft electrical and avionics systems from concept through compliance.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Design & Architect
  • Lead system architecture and design decisions for aerospace electrical systems.
  • Design and analyze power distribution, circuit designs, and wiring/harness installations for commercial and VIP aircraft.
  • Create and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and installation drawings meeting FAA/EASA requirements.
  • Generate bills of materials, wire lists, and connector pin assignments for production and installation teams.

Integrate & Troubleshoot
  • Lead integration, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical systems, including power distribution, wiring, avionics, and related hardware.
  • Provide hands on technical guidance resolving complex electrical and avionics integration issues.
  • Coordinate with avionics suppliers, systems engineers, and certification specialists on equipment selection and integration.

Verify & Certify
  • Support qualification and verification activities, ensuring compliance with aerospace standards.
  • Provide engineering substantiation, compliance reports, and test documentation for FAA/EASA certification.
  • Maintain engineering documentation and lead design reviews across engineering, certification, and production teams.
Impact: Your leadership on electrical system design and verification shapes the airworthiness and certification outcomes of aircraft programs worldwide. As a senior engineer, you'll be the technical authority on the most complex electrical challenges, contributing to STCs and type certificate projects that bring modern technology to aircraft platforms.
WHAT YOU BRING
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years designing aircraft electrical systems or integrating avionics.
  • Demonstrated expertise in power distribution, circuit design, and wiring/harness design and analysis.
  • Strong hands on capability integrating, testing, and troubleshooting avionics and electrical systems.
  • Experience with electrical system verification, qualification, and applicable aerospace standards.

WHY ALTITUDE
  • Real Programs: Lead design work on active aircraft modification and certification programs with tangible, high visibility deliverables.
  • Technical Ownership: Step into a senior role with real authority over design decisions.
  • Variety: Work across commercial, VIP, and military platforms and diverse electrical systems.
  • Growth: Small enough for hands on leadership, large enough for international program exposure.
  • Technical Depth: Work alongside experienced DERs and certification specialists.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
