What does a senior process development engineer do?

A Senior Process Development Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. They often lead teams in scaling up processes from the laboratory to full production, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement new technologies or methods. Additionally, they collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, quality assurance, and production, to ensure processes meet regulatory and safety standards. Their expertise helps companies maintain competitive advantages and meet production goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior process development engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Process Development Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or mechanical engineering, process optimization, and project management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, process simulation tools (such as Aspen Plus or MATLAB), and Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certifications is often required. Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help you coordinate cross-functional teams and drive continuous improvement. These skills are crucial for developing efficient, scalable processes that meet quality standards and business goals.

What are some common challenges a senior process development engineer may face when scaling up a new process from the lab to full production?

Senior Process Development Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining product quality and consistency when transitioning from small-scale laboratory experiments to large-scale manufacturing. This process typically involves troubleshooting equipment limitations, optimizing process parameters, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as R&D, manufacturing, and quality assurance, is crucial to address these challenges and achieve a smooth scale-up. Adaptability and problem-solving skills are essential to navigate unexpected issues that may arise during this transition.

What is the difference between Senior Process Development Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectSenior Process Development EngineerProcess Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering; experience in process developmentBachelor's degree in Engineering or related field; entry to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentResearch and development labs, manufacturing facilities, cross-functional teamsManufacturing plants, production lines, process optimization teams
Industry UsagePharmaceuticals, chemicals, biotech, manufacturingManufacturing, chemical processing, consumer goods

The main difference is that Senior Process Development Engineers focus on developing and optimizing new processes, often in R&D settings, while Process Engineers typically oversee existing manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and quality. Senior roles involve more strategic planning and innovation, whereas Process Engineers focus on day-to-day process operations.

Job description

Senior Electrical Engineer - Embedded Systems and Product Development
Lynntech is seeking an experienced electrical engineer to develop complete electrical and embedded systems for prototype products in the defense, aerospace, and medical markets. A successful candidate will have opportunity to work across the product development lifecycle, from early-stage technology proof-of-concept, through prototype development and testing, to qualification of production-ready designs. The engineer will develop complete, multi-disciplinary electrical solutions, including embedded firmware/software development, custom circuit board design, integration of custom and commercial components into electrical systems, design for manufacturability, and system verification and validation.
In addition to executing technical work in the development of technologies and prototypes, a successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute through leadership of project teams, mentoring other engineers, and identifying and advancing new technologies as part of proposal writing teams.
Job Description
At Lynntech, engineering is both theoretical and experimental. Our engineers split their time between developing detailed prototype designs and validating those designs in the lab. Engineering projects involve a wide variety of technologies at different stages in the product life cycle, from breadboard proof-of-concepts to minimum viable products. Our electronics engineers are commonly engaged in the following technical activities:
  • Designing electrical system architectures and integrating custom electronics with commercial off-the-shelf components, such as power supplies, motor drivers, sensors, actuators, communication devices, connectors, and industrial control hardware.
  • Developing system wiring diagrams, cable and wire-harness designs, interface-control documentation, and power-distribution architectures
  • Designing and modeling of schematics for both analog and digital circuits
  • Designing and testing custom printed circuit boards for analog and digital applications
  • Creating custom firmware implementations on a variety of platforms for implementation into advanced test fixtures, prototype designs, and marketable products
  • Maturing prototype electrical systems into reproducible and supportable product designs through component derating, tolerance analysis, design-for-manufacture and design-for-test practices, environmental considerations, and verification against system requirements

A Senior engineer will also be involved in leadership activities in many facets of technology advancement and transition:
  • Working with customers, end users, business-development personnel, and manufacturing partners to translate operational needs into technical requirements and map out technology development strategies
  • Collaborating with scientists and engineers to develop grant proposals for the exploration and application of new technologies and the continued development of core technologies
  • Leading design engineers in early-stage project research to support development of system requirements, architecture, and interfaces for an envisioned prototype
  • Developing and executing test plans for evaluating the performance of prototype designs based on system requirements
  • Designing and fabricating test fixtures to support evaluation of prototypes, from breadboard systems to minimum viable products
  • Planning and conducting system design verification and validation activities
  • Supporting technical writing efforts to generate customer reports for existing projects
  • Supporting technology transition activities, including technical maturation, cost and manufacturability assessments, qualification testing, field demonstrations, and transfer of designs to internal or external manufacturing organizations

Working as an electronics engineer at Lynntech has potential for many and varied long-term career opportunities. Our engineers can advance as technical experts in their discipline, develop expertise in one or more technology areas, and/or take on project, personnel, or other leadership roles. Long-term growth opportunities abound in the engineering career path, where our engineers can determine their own ceiling according to their passion, proficiency, and ability to add value to the engineering team and the organization.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related field with at least 5 years of progressively complex engineering experience (or Masters Degree with at least 2 years of experience)
  • Strong fundamentals in electrical, electronics, and software engineering with the ability to review and provide feedback on peers' designs, as well as develop your own designs
  • Experience in developing system and subsystem architectures in the areas of system control, power distribution, and embedded systems based on top-level product requirements and technology constraints
  • Ability to mentor a team of junior engineers, and autonomously facilitate design decisions in a collaborative environment
  • Strong technical writing, speaking, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment involving close interaction with other engineers within the department as well as other scientists in the company
  • Must be a US Citizen, or Permanent Resident, to meet project contract requirements
