Job Description:

 

L3Harris is seeking a Senior Associate Tool Design Engineer to join our team at our growing AMF facility in Huntsville, AL. Manual and semi-automated tooling such as jigs, fixtures, molds, mandrels, and lifting devices are all required in the fabrication and assembly of solid fuel rocket motors. Tool Engineers are responsible to define all of these items.  The role of Tool Engineering is mixture of design, structural analysis, project management and hands on manufacturing. 

 

Essential Functions:

  • Work with cross functional teams define tool requirements.
  • Design using PTC Creo and Windchill in accordance with principles of Design for Manufacturability.
  • Use finite element analysis (FEA) methods and tools to perform structural analysis of tools in order to predict internal stresses and resolve structural instabilities.
  • Conduct design reviews with cross functional teams to obtain approval of tool designs.
  • Oversee procurement and fabrication of tooling.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineers to perform functional evaluations and acceptance of the tooling.
  • Perform liaison support for tool maintenance by identification of tool problems, design of repairs and implementation of modifications.
  • Skilled in application of GD&T and system tolerance analysis.
  • Proficient with tools of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain a US Secret Security Clearance.
  • Travel (5%).

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience.  A Graduate Degree, or equivalent, with 0 to 2 years prior mechanical engineering design experience.  In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 6 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience.

 

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience with Siemens NX is a plus.
  • Experience with ANSYS is a plus.
  • Fabrication experience is a plus.
  • Composite Wind tool design and/or fabrication experience is a plus.
  • Compression Mold tool design and/or fabrication experience is a plus.
  • Existing clearance is a plus.
  • Experience working in the defense industry is a plus.
  • Experience working in the defense industry is desired.
