What does a senior landscape designer do?

A Senior Landscape Designer is responsible for planning, designing, and managing outdoor spaces such as gardens, parks, and commercial landscapes. They create detailed plans and drawings, select appropriate plants and materials, and often oversee installation and maintenance. Senior designers also collaborate with clients, architects, and contractors to ensure projects meet aesthetic, functional, and environmental requirements. Their role involves both creative design and technical knowledge of landscaping principles and regulations.

How does a senior landscape designer typically collaborate with architects and other stakeholders during project development?

A Senior Landscape Designer regularly works alongside architects, engineers, and planners to ensure that landscape elements align seamlessly with overall site plans and client objectives. This collaboration often involves participating in design charrettes, reviewing architectural drawings, and providing input on plant selection, grading, and sustainable practices. Clear communication and the ability to integrate feedback from diverse professionals are essential, as these projects frequently require balancing aesthetic goals with technical and regulatory considerations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior landscape designer, and why are they important?

  • Collaborate with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative watershed planning and stormwater management solutions.
  • Assist in field inspections, data collection, and site assessments.
  • Participate in public outreach, stakeholder engagement, and project presentations as needed

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors in Civil, Environmental Engineering, Landscape Architecture or related disciplines.
  • Approximately 8 or more years of experience in water resources and stream restoration or stabilization.
