What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Help Desk Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Help Desk Technician, you need advanced troubleshooting skills, strong knowledge of operating systems and networks, and typically an associate's or bachelor's degree in IT or a related field. Familiarity with ticketing systems (like ServiceNow), remote desktop tools, and certifications such as CompTIA A+ or Microsoft Certified are commonly required. Excellent communication, patience, and leadership abilities help you resolve issues efficiently and mentor junior staff. These skills are critical for minimizing downtime, ensuring user satisfaction, and maintaining smooth IT operations.

How does a Senior Help Desk Technician typically balance hands-on technical troubleshooting with mentoring junior team members?

A Senior Help Desk Technician is often responsible for resolving complex technical issues while also supporting the growth of junior technicians. This involves dividing time between handling advanced support tickets, documenting solutions, and providing guidance or training to less experienced staff. Senior technicians are frequently consulted for escalations and are expected to set best practices, fostering a collaborative environment where knowledge sharing is encouraged. This dual focus not only ensures high-quality service but also helps develop a strong, skilled help desk team.

What are Senior Help Desk Technicians?

Senior Help Desk Technicians are experienced IT professionals who provide advanced technical support and troubleshooting for computer systems, software, and network issues within an organization. They handle complex technical problems that junior staff may not be able to resolve, mentor and train help desk team members, and often work closely with other IT departments to ensure efficient problem resolution. Senior Help Desk Technicians also play a role in documenting solutions, maintaining knowledge bases, and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.

What is the best remote job for seniors?

A Senior Help Desk Technician can work remotely by providing technical support, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and assisting users via phone, email, or remote access tools. This role often requires strong communication skills, basic certifications like CompTIA A+, and the ability to work independently in a flexible schedule.

Job description

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

The Help Desk Technician, based at our Corporate Headquarters in Reno, Nevada, is a pivotal role in delivering exceptional technical support to our users. You will be working in a dynamic team environment in a modern, clean office. Our Help Desk Technicians address and resolve technical issues, ensuring that our employees can efficiently utilize computer systems, software, and hardware.

Reporting to our IT Infrastructure Manager, you’ll primarily work with a talented team of Computer Support Specialists and Systems Administrators within our infrastructure department. You will work with computer users throughout the company and outside vendors.

A highlight of your day-to-day will include:

  • Hardware/Software Installations: Set up and install cables, operating systems, software, hardware, and peripheral equipment, following design or installation specifications; enter commands and observe system functioning to verify correct operations and detect errors.
  • Support Requests: Resolve software or hardware operation issues; guide users through troubleshooting procedures and develop troubleshooting scripts.
  • Record Keeping: Record daily data communication transactions, problems, remedial actions taken, and installation activities.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with the infrastructure team to analyze, modify, and test computer systems and programs based on users and system specifications. Prepare evaluations of software or hardware and recommend improvements or upgrades.
  • Security Awareness: Maintain a secure IT environment, fostering a culture of security consciousness within the company.
  • Customer Service: Provide professional communication and excellent customer service when interacting with both internal and external stakeholders.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

You’re enthusiastic and motivated in a fast-paced environment. You have demonstrated knowledge of IT security practices and a commitment to maintaining a secure IT environment. You’re a lifelong learner with a combination of formal education (CompTIA A+ certification preferred) and 1 - 2 years of solid on-the-job experience including VOIP and Office 365 programs. If you have a passion for IT, troubleshooting expertise, and the skills to provide top-notch technical support, we want to hear from you.

We’re open to individuals who aren’t just looking for their next job, they’re looking to build a career. You want an opportunity to showcase your skill set with a solid company who will invest in you. In our culture – everyone matters.

ALL ABOUT JENSEN INFRASTRUCTURE

Much like you, our founder, Don Jensen was looking for a way to support his family, so he started his Company in 1968. Since founded, we’ve been supporting communities across Nevada, California, Arizona, Washington, Missouri, and Hawaii.

Jensen Infrastructure likely has an impact on your daily life.  We build culverts to take water away from your neighborhoods, underground utility boxes to hold cables, and manholes to allow workers access to the sewers deep below the roads we drive on. And that’s just a small sample of what we do at Jensen on a daily basis.

When you work at one of Jensen’s many locations, you will enjoy the close relationships and camaraderie of a small company while being part of a larger, well-established, growing company.

We are committed to ensuring employment practices that promote equal opportunities. Please let us know if you require any reasonable accommodations during your interview process.

If there is an offer, the salary presented will consider several factors including, but not limited to, geographical location, a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, training, and internal equity. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Jensen Infrastructure. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package including 401(k) with match, PTO, and paid holidays.
