What Does a Senior Financial Analyst Do?

Financial analysts improve a company’s financial profile by aligning accounting decisions with economic trends. Once they have at least 4-6 years of work experience, financial analysts can advance towards a senior financial analyst role. Senior financial analysts closely examine data, then use their findings to advise on investment decisions. They also supervise other members of the finance department, support forecasting, and prepare financial proposals to be approved by the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Financial Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Financial Analyst, you need advanced financial modeling, data analysis, and reporting skills, typically backed by a degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with financial software such as Excel, SAP, Hyperion, and often a CFA or CPA certification is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help you interpret complex data and present actionable insights to stakeholders. These skills are crucial for driving strategic business decisions and ensuring accurate financial planning and analysis.

How does a Senior Financial Analyst typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Senior Financial Analysts frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with departments such as operations, marketing, and sales to gather data, understand business drivers, and provide financial insights. They often participate in meetings with department heads to discuss budgeting, forecasting, and strategic initiatives. This collaborative approach ensures that financial analysis aligns with organizational goals and supports effective decision-making. Additionally, Senior Financial Analysts may help train junior analysts and present findings to executive leadership, fostering strong communication and teamwork across the organization.

What are Senior Financial Analysts?

Senior Financial Analysts are experienced finance professionals who analyze financial data, create reports, and provide insights to help organizations make informed business decisions. They often lead financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis, working closely with management to interpret results and guide strategy. Their role may also involve mentoring junior analysts and presenting findings to executive leadership. Senior Financial Analysts play a critical role in driving financial performance and supporting long-term business planning.

Job description

What you'll do

As Sr. Financial Analyst, Corporate Finance & Strategy, you'll sit at the center of how Giga thinks about growth, capital, and long-range value creation. This isn't a reporting role - it's a seat at the table where real strategic decisions get made. You'll work directly with executive leadership to evaluate M&A opportunities, model capital structure scenarios, and build the financial narrative that guides how we allocate resources and communicate our story to the market. If you want to see the full picture of a high-growth infrastructure company and shape decisions that actually matter, this is that role.

Where you'll work

We are an in-office culture - velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is ideally based in our San Francisco, Long Beach, or Houston offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays.

That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent if you live outside one of our hubs. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.

Responsibilities
  • Lead corporate financial modeling efforts including long-range planning, scenario analysis, and valuation work to support executive and board-level decision-making.
  • Drive strategic financial analysis for M&A, partnerships, and capital allocation decisions, including building and owning financial models from the ground up.
  • Develop and maintain investor-ready materials including board presentations, investor decks, and financing memoranda.
  • Partner with business unit leaders to evaluate ROI, unit economics, and strategic tradeoffs on major initiatives.
  • Own competitive benchmarking and industry analysis to contextualize Giga's financial performance and positioning.
  • Support fundraising, debt financing, and other capital markets activities as needed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting systems, and analytical frameworks across the organization.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in investment banking, private equity, corporate development, or a high-growth corporate finance function.
  • Expert-level financial modeling skills, including DCF, LBO, merger models, and scenario analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex financial data into clear narratives and strategic recommendations.
  • Experience presenting to senior leadership or boards with confidence and clarity.
  • Proficiency in Excel/Google Sheets; ability to build and own complex models independently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills - you can explain numbers to people who don't speak finance.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or a related field.
Bonus Points
  • Experience in energy, infrastructure, data centers, or capital-intensive industries.
  • Exposure to project finance, structured finance, or tax equity transactions.
  • MBA or CFA designation.
  • Experience supporting a company through a fundraise, IPO, or M&A transaction as an internal finance team member.
  • Proficiency with BI or financial planning tools such as Tableau, Mosaic, Adaptive, or Anaplan.
Benefits
  • Subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Equity (options) in a rapidly growing startup
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Parental leave
  • Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Commuter benefits
