Job description

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Prototyping Technician I is an entry-level member of the Mechanical Engineering, Prototyping and Automation group, part of Galvion’s Engineering & R&D department. Reporting to the Prototyping Supervisor, this position supports the fabrication of mock-ups, prototypes, jigs and fixtures required to validate concepts during the new product development and product improvement processes.

The Prototyping Technician I provides hands-on assistance to designers and engineers, learns the proper use of prototyping equipment, develops basic mechanical and electrical/electronic assembly skills, and contributes feedback to help optimize design concepts before release for production.


WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

People:

  • Works closely with the Prototyping Supervisor and senior technicians to learn prototyping best practices and Galvion-specific methods.
  • Collaborates with design engineers, automation engineers, ballistics, production and suppliers under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Builds peer relationships across the Engineering & R&D department.
  • Receives coaching from the Prototyping Technician II and III on equipment operation, safety practices and electrical/electronic assembly techniques.

Process:

  • Assists in the fabrication of mock-ups and prototypes per direction from the Prototyping Supervisor and senior technicians.
  • Operates basic hand tools, power tools and rapid prototyping equipment (3D printers, laser cutter, basic CNC, etc.) under supervision.
  • Performs basic electrical and electronic assembly tasks, including soldering, wire harness preparation, simple circuit assembly and reading of basic wiring diagrams and schematics.
  • Helps maintain the cleanliness, organization and 5S standards of the prototype shop.
  • Records and documents prototype iterations, materials used, build steps and observations.
  • Supports the operation, basic preventive maintenance and inspection of rapid prototyping equipment.
  • Supports the design and engineering teams with basic CAD tasks, simple drafting and supplier/manufacturer communication as directed.
  • Supports Production with the fabrication of simple jigs, templates and fixtures.
  • Other duties as required.

Performance:

  • Builds technical proficiency in prototyping methods, equipment use and electrical/electronic assembly through hands-on work and training.
  • Contributes observations and feedback during prototype iterations to help optimize design concepts.
  • Identifies basic opportunities to improve cleanliness, organization and safety in the prototype shop.
  • Adheres to all safety, 5S and quality requirements at all times.


WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED

  • DEP, AEC or first year of CEGEP/college program in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, Drafting, Electromechanical Technology, or a related field.
  • 0–2 years of practical experience (recent graduates encouraged to apply).
  • Basic manual skills for prototyping with small hand tools and common shop equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and electronic principles, including soldering, simple circuit assembly and the ability to read basic wiring diagrams and schematics.
  • Basic knowledge of SolidWorks, Illustrator and Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with technologies, materials and manufacturing methods for plastics, composites and rapid prototyping is a plus.
  • Knowledge of standard design and drawing practices is a plus.
  • Experience in a production or shop environment is a plus.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and accept direction.
  • Strong English and French verbal communication and writing skills required.
  • Knowledge of Military and Personal Protective Equipment standards is a plus.


Work Environment 

  • Office-based and manufacturing environment, including R&D and production areas.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 35 pounds.
  • Eye protection required; hearing and respiratory protection may be required.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.

Ce que vous ferez

À titre de Technicien(ne) en prototypage I, vous participerez à la fabrication de maquettes, prototypes, gabarits et montages utilisés pour valider de nouveaux concepts de produits ainsi que des améliorations de produits existants. En travaillant aux côtés d'ingénieurs et de techniciens expérimentés, vous acquerrez une expérience pratique précieuse en fabrication de prototypes, en usinage mécanique et en assemblage électrique et électronique.


Vos principales responsabilités seront les suivantes :

  • Participer à la fabrication et à l'assemblage de prototypes, maquettes, gabarits et montages.
  • Utiliser, sous supervision, des outils manuels, des outils électriques, des imprimantes 3D, des découpeuses laser et d'autres équipements de prototypage rapide.
  • Effectuer des travaux de base en assemblage électrique et électronique, notamment le brasage (soudure), la préparation de faisceaux de câbles et l'assemblage de circuits simples.
  • Lire et interpréter des schémas électriques de base ainsi que des dessins mécaniques.
  • Documenter les montages de prototypes, les observations lors des essais et les différentes itérations de conception.
  • Participer à l'entretien préventif et à l'organisation de l'atelier de prototypage tout en maintenant les normes 5S.
  • Soutenir les équipes d'ingénierie dans des travaux de CAO, de dessin technique et de communication avec les fournisseurs.
  • Appuyer la production en fabriquant des outillages et des montages simples.
  • Respecter toutes les politiques de sécurité, de qualité et les procédures de l'entreprise.

Qualifications requises

  • DEP, AEC ou première année complétée d'un programme collégial (CÉGEP) en technologie de génie mécanique, dessin industriel, design industriel, technologie électromécanique ou dans une discipline connexe.
  • De 0 à 2 ans d'expérience pertinente (les personnes récemment diplômées sont fortement encouragées à postuler).
  • Bonnes aptitudes mécaniques et expérience de base avec les outils manuels et les équipements d'atelier courants.
  • Connaissances de base en électricité et en électronique, incluant le brasage (soudure) et la lecture de schémas électriques simples.
  • Connaissance de SolidWorks, Adobe Illustrator et de la suite Microsoft Office.
